Wikipedia:WikiProject Andhra Pradesh/Coordinate Me 2024
Project page for improving geo data on Wikidata, Wikipedia (English, Telugu), and OpenStreetmap. 15512 villages on Wikidata have coordinates on wikidata at the end of Coordinate ME 2024 project. This is an increase of 11816 or 347%. As per the results, Arjunaraoc and Saiphani02 found a place in the winners list.
Coordinate Me 2024 announcement
[edit]Please participate in Coordinate Me 2024 during May 2024 and win gifts. Support in improving the quality of geographical coordinates for the villages of Andhra Pradesh. This helps improve maps in Wikipedia, and OpenStreetMap. As a first priority, add coordinates for revenue village entries using AP State GIS portal. This is very easy. From the required villages (Example query for Guntur district completed, for other district queries and status click here ), search for the coordinates in AP State GIS portal using Geocode locator menu. You can use village name and mandal/district name if required. Click coordinate symbol in Measurement menu and move the mouse to the place name and copy the displayed coordinates. Paste these coordinates and edit to change the order and separate them with a comma. Add reference with "stated in" and value as "APSGISP" (Example addition) In the past Telugu wikipedian as part of photography contest, added coordinates using online sources such as Google. But these can not be transferred to Wikidata, as wikidata is CC-0 licensed. Currently fo Andhra pradesh, there are coordinate entries for about 5000 revenue villages out of 16000 revenue villages. Many of them also are defective due to import from various wikipedias without validation check. This activity is very helpful for improving maps on Wikipedia and also for providing OSM Telugu maps using wikidata mapping to OSM. For more information check my OSM diary entry "Improving geodata accuracy on OSM and Wikidata" . Enroll here with your wikipedia account and start contributing. Contact me or discuss on the talk page for any clarifications. --Arjunaraoc (talk) 12:40, 28 April 2024 (UTC)
Status prior to project
[edit]2943 out of 13086 revenue villages have coordinates on Wikidata. Additionally 453 hamlets also have coordinates. This make it a total of 3396. A screenshot taken on 2024-05-01 (with query) is shown.
Status at end of Project
[edit]15,512 villages now have coordinates an increase of 11,816 or 347%. Out of these 14,823 are revenue villages and 689 are hamlets. A total of 16,152 inhabited revenue villages exist, which means a coverage of 96.03%. A screenshot taken on 2024-06-01 (with query) is shown along with its closeup view. Thanks to all participants. About 640 villages are likely to be mostly farm lands, which needs to be addressed with update of geometric centre of the census village. Updating Wikidata on OSM and further cleanups is continuing.
Results
[edit]The results of the Coordinate Me 2024 competition held in May were announced released. Out of the 30 people who were awarded, 9 worked on topics related to India. Among them, 5 worked exclusively on Indian topics. It is notable that two people who worked on Andhra Pradesh topics, namely Arjunaraoc and Saiphani02 are in this list.

Should I add coordinates for each item?
[edit]While the objective is to add coordinates for each item, the coordinates added should be of good quality. Some times at the location presented on APSGIS, there may not be any evidence of residential streets. APSGIP also has some errors because it is showing panchayat hq on census village shape centroid, which may not be on a residential area. so carefully check for additional layers like Habitation (red triangle, red circles) to confirm the location. Based on the past experience, only about 90% of census villages can be located properly through APSGISP. As each wikidata item related to land requires a coordinate location, please add the census village location as a last resort. If in doubt, discuss the issue on the talk page.
How can I check that the coordinates that I added are correct?
[edit]OSM already has lot of villages. The coordinate is presented with OSM as background map on the Wikidata page and on the corresponding English Wikipedia page. If you can see the label of village on OSM map near to the coordinates, then it is most likely correct. For more visual explanation, please check the OSM diary note.
Can I add coordinates from other online sources such as Google maps?
[edit]Data on Wikidata is licensed copyright free i.e CC-0. As sources such as Google maps are copyright protected, they should not be used as source for coordinates. Only copyright free sources such as AP State GIS portal, and whosonfirst website can be made use of.
I can not put much effort, but would like to add the places that I am familiar with. Is it possible?
[edit]Yes. Use this query to check the places on OSM map with coordinate location on wikidata. If you do not find a red dot near your places of interest, then go ahead and search for them on Wikidata and add coordinate location.
Are there any messaging platforms to discuss?
[edit]- Use OSM Andhra Pradesh telegram group.
APSGIS web map has confusing symbols (legend)? How do I pickup the correct location?
[edit]It is true that APSGIS portal displays different symbols at different zoom levels. Green circle represents the census village location as per Census 2011, which need not be on a residential area. Blue star over a circle represents the head quarters of mandal, panchayat etc, but panchayat head quarter is shown over census village location, while the search result might be actually over the residential area, go for search result in that case. Red circle also is some times useful as it represents habitations. Pick up the location corresponding to residential areas as evidenced by satellite image base layer.
An alternative source for coordinates of all habitations is PMGSY habitation data visualised at PMGSY visualisation by Nikhil VJ.
I find the name not matching with that on OpenStreet map? How to resolve?
[edit]Due to spelling errors, the name of current wikidata item may not match with other sources like Wikipedia article names or from online sources. In such a case, sites like https://localbodydata.com which provide info on village panchayats and provide links to egramswaraj site may be useful to confirm Telugu spellings and locate coordinates from geotagged reports/photos page. For example, Koditadiparru is modified as as Korutadiparru from https://egramswaraj.gov.in/getMactionPhoto.do?imgId=/opt/actionsoft/attachment/mActionSoft/photoupload/28/2023/Image_17102023174501827.png via https://localbodydata.com/gram-panchayat-korutadiparru-199964 . If you are using the site for village location, then use https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q125747325 (eGramSwaraj) for 'stated in' property.
I could not find it in APSGISP. Are there any other sources that I can use?
[edit]You can check in OSM. As OSM has data sourced from Bhuvan, you may find it. If you find it, use https://indianopenmaps.fly.dev/habitations/pmgsy/view for confirmation. For example for Malagummi, the url is https://indianopenmaps.fly.dev/habitations/pmgsy/view#14/18.27958/82.54667 Mention value for property "stated in" as PMGSY Habitations Dataset. I determined there is no residential area for the census village. What should I do?
[edit]Several census villages have primarly only farm land. These do not have associated gram panchayat. As every geographical data items on Wikidata require coordinate location, add census village geometric centre(centroid) location from APSGISP, when other efforts fail to locate the residential area location.
