This course is an interdisciplinary exploration of gender relations and the experiences of women in American culture from the early colonial period to the present. Throughout the semester we will proceed in a more or less chronological fashion as we consider the interplay between women’s lived experiences and the law, politics, economics, migration, industrialization, technological advances, and consumerism. Issues of difference – racial, economic, ethnic, and sexual orientation – and their impact on notions and definitions of femininity and womanhood, and how these changed over time, as well as relations between women, will be a particular emphasis in this course. Through close readings of primary and secondary sources, print culture and various other cultural productions, we will look at the multiple ways in which women self-identified to reveal resistance to prescribed notions of femininity and womanhood and the consequences of non-conformity.
