In recent years American political debates appear more divisive and informed by increasingly inflexible attitudes about politicians, public policies, the role of government, and even democratic governance itself. Concerning the latter issue (democratic governance), recent political controversies have focused on matters such as attitudinal polarization; why people vote (and even who should be allowed to vote); how the media influence political thought and how much we know about politicians, political offices, and processes; and how much participation is required for democratic governance to succeed? Each of these questions are key to the study of political behavior and each are topics we will investigate in this class. In doing so, the class will give you the tools you need to critically assess the construction, conduct, and reporting of public opinion surveys. In addition, you will learn how to apply important concepts from social science that will enhance the analytical skills you will need for careers such as law, business, and public affairs.
