This course surveys Western art history from the Renaissance to the twentieth century. Students examine how religious, cultural, and philosophical aspects of European and American society impacted and were influenced by art and architecture during this time.

Welcome to the Wikipedia Project's timeline! This page will guide you through the project requirements for ART 259. Your 6-week project will be completed at home, outside of our regularly scheduled class sessions.
This semester, we have been analyzing how traditional narratives of art history often marginalize women artists, artists of color, and LGBTQ+ artists (among others). The purpose of our project is therefore to improve Wikipedia's content by adding well-researched, well-documented information on artists who may have been excluded or overlooked.
- Assignment - Get Started
This week, you will begin to familiarize yourself with Wikipedia and our course project. To earn points for Week 7:
- Create your account and join this course page, using the enrollment link that you were emailed. The general public will be able to see your username on Wikipedia, so I recommend selecting a username that is G-rated and does not reference your actual name.
- Complete the required training listed below.
- Read Editing Wikipedia pages 1–5

- Assignment - Artist Selection
This week, you will select a woman artist, artist of color, or LGBTQ+ artist on which to base your project. Remember that these underrepresented groups are often left out of art historical narratives, so the purpose of this project is to improve and expand Wikipedia's content. To earn points for Week 8:
- Complete the required training listed below.
- Read Editing Wikipedia page 6
- Choose an artist no later than 10/14. You can assign yourself their article by using the "Students" tab above.
Each artist may only be chosen once, so I recommend browsing your classmates' selections before making your own. If you select an artist whom one of your classmates has already chosen, you will be asked to pick someone else.

- Assignment - Article Evaluation
This week, you will think critically about your chosen Wikipedia article. To earn points for Week 9:
- Complete the required training listed below.
- Read through your article and evaluate its content. What information about the artist is currently missing? What additions could be made to supplement these gaps?
- Write a few sentences in your sandbox that describe the missing facts you hope to find and contribute to your article no later than 10/21.

- Assignment - Research Your Artist
This week, you will continue researching your chosen artist. To earn points for Week 10:

- Check out library books, read scholarly articles, and research your artist to familiarize yourself with their life and work.
- Post a bibliography of at least 3 reliable sources in your sandbox no later than 10/28.

- Assignment - Draft Your Content
This week, you will draft additions to your Wikipedia article. To earn points for Week 11:
- Complete the required trainings listed below.
- Read Editing Wikipedia pages 7-9
- Organize research on your chosen artist in your sandbox. Make sure your facts are notable and enhance our understanding of the artist's background, education, artistic practice, etc. Use complete sentences when writing, and present all facts in your own words. Remember to maintain a formal tone and proofread your work thoroughly. A solid draft of your additions should appear in your sandbox no later than 11/4.
- Support your additions by providing proper citation to reliable sources. Citing your sources is required to avoid plagiarism.

- Assignment - Copyedit & Move
This week, you will share and finalize your research. To earn points for Week 12:
- Read Editing Wikipedia pages 12-15
- Click on the "Students" tab above to begin the peer review process. Then, click the "sandboxes" link beneath your partner's name. Read through their content carefully, looking for ways to fix any grammatical mistakes and improve their sentence structure. You do not need to contribute new information--just refine your partner's work and make appropriate changes where needed. You must edit your partner's content no later than Friday 11/10. Be sure to include your name with your suggestions in order to receive credit. If no edits are needed, simply state that your partner's content is clear and grammatically correct, and then include your name.
- Finalize your own project, reviewing your partner's suggestions and making last minute improvements.
- Move your completed content to Wikipedia's mainspace no later than Saturday 11/11.
We will use in-class time on 11/14 to discuss your experiences with the Wikipedia Project and to critically analyze the project's effectiveness, impact, shortcomings, etc.
