This course surveys central topics in the study of gender and politics. We cover issues including gender and political behavior, the election of women to political office, legislative efforts on behalf of women, women’s movements, intersectionality, and the politics of masculinity. We draw on examples from various world regions and time periods to analyze similarities and differences across cases around the globe.

We are moving from a traditional research paper to a Wikipedia-based assignment because many important gender and politics concepts--and even female politicians--receive limited coverage on Wikipedia. Rice University students are smart and ambitious, and we can genuinely make the world a slightly better place by enhancing Wikipedia's coverage of gender and politics related issues.
