Topics Covered

[edit]

The workshop fist covered the very basics of Wikipedia (and it's sister projects) and how they are built. Then the participants were explained some real and first hand examples of what benefits editing Wikipedia gives. Using real editors and articles, they were shown the type of impact editors can make. The video "The Impact of Wikipedia - Pink Floyd, Baking and Whitewater Kayaking" was played.

After this, every participant was encouraged to make a new User account and suggested to try The Wikipedia Adventure. They were also introduced to The Teahouse and The Wikipedia Tutorial. Other than that, the facilitators walked around and helped the students with doubts.

The facilitators covered basic Wikipedia policies and lessons for the participants. The Five Pillars were explained, as were the policies for Notability, Reliable Sources, Neutral Point of View and others. Free licensing was discussed in some detail, as well as the various namespaces.

Finally, participants were encouraged to choose a stub to expand on or any new article to be created (as a stub) for their first article. This first contribution would be continued in the next workshop.

Outcome

[edit]

There were about 20+ User accounts created during the Hackathon.

Almost everyone was interested in attending the next workshop on editing Wikipedia.
