I wanted to include a Log in section (which may take a little more than my expertise). Also, I wanted to include the excerpt from Wikipedia:About. Lastly, I like the look of standard headings to create a cohesive and simple appearance. Please comment, there are many, many possibilities for this design. Comments[edit]

Sorry but this Seems to old fashion and blandEE 22:21, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I like this one because it has "about" and "log in" sections. –thedemonhog talkedits 22:34, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I like the introduction, it makes you actually want to read it. :) The date to the right of the header is redundant in my opinion, but I don't have any suggestions of what should go there instead. The rest of it is a tad bland IMO, but not bad at all. — FatalError 03:00, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! As far as the date goes, the search box could go there, or portals... or nothing at all even. Scottydude talk 03:08, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe its the development, but this thing is horribly disjointed. Spacing is all off. Difficult on eyes.Yeago (talk) 01:42, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No login box.[edit]

The main page is for readers not editors. It's not the right place for a login box. It makes it seem like one needs to log in just to read. Most people just read and don't edit... keep that in mind-- and you don't even need to login to edit. It's just something some of us choose to do. futurebird (talk) 22:36, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I added the login box to promote the use of accounts. I think that the more active users the better. I think that most people who are looking to use wikipedia, and have decided not to create an account will not be deterred by a login box. Scottydude talk 22:44, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The login box could also be a search box. See here. Scottydude talk 01:59, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Login -> Search Box[edit]

I have changed the login box to a search box per the discussion above. It is important to note that either can be used. Personally, I wasn't attempting to make a considerably bold point by adding a login box.

Another important thing to take into account on this design (and all others for that matter) is that the traditional "Main Page" title (in this case the Wikipedia:2008 main page redesign proposal/Scottydude title) will not be seen. Therefore, the "Featured article" and "In the news" sections will be fully visible in the average browser without scrolling down. Scottydude talk 02:16, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By FAR the best yet[edit]

Just had to say that this proposal by far looks the best yet. The date clearly showing in the top right corner, a search tool in a great place near the top right as well, I love it. I'll definitely be voting for this one. Great job, Scotty!. — `CRAZY`(lN)`SANE` 03:35, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Scottydude talk 16:20, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Boxes[edit]

I'm a bit apprehensive about how the boxes for each section don't line-up. I know that's variable with the content, but adding rigid borders for them makes it really noticeable. matt91486 (talk) 03:37, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's OK for the first two boxes if one likes the modern art/Japanese ink brush minimalist feel, but the large obvious blank space at the end of the TFA-DYK column is really jarring. BTW, I do like the modern art/Japanese ink brush minimalist feel. - BanyanTree 04:45, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I must admit I wasn't thinking "Japanese art brush" more like "Wikipedia article" minimalist. Thanks though. Scottydude talk 16:22, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The boxes are badly misaligned on my monitor (low-res, if that's relevant - not sure whether it is here), resulting in over half of the page being empty whitespace. The On This Day and Did You Know boxes even manage to overlap each other at the corners. Anaxial (talk) 21:36, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good[edit]

Scottydude, looks good and I see we're in agreement on parts of the design, though I think I agree with the growing number of commenters on the project talk page that a second search box might not be needed. It would sure help if the project knew what content people want on the page, maybe too soon to know. —SusanLesch (talk) 07:15, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it seems like the project got ahead of itself. I have to disagree on the search box matter. Regardless, thanks for the comment! Scottydude talk 15:17, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
