Donghun proposal[edit]

I am interested in article of women in South Korea. The reason why I choose this article is that South Korea has gender gap in economy, political, culture although enhanced a status of women as much as a status of men after elected women president. For example, in South Korea, the female employment rate is very low because society culture force women to be responsible for spending more time for both taking care of children and house working than men. For working women, it is very hard to work at the same time and looks like not focus on the working to employer. So, many women in South Korea face dilemma to choose to delay marriage or prefer to childless family for pursue their careers or quit their job for reasons such as marriage and fertility. In many companies, employer prefers women to employ as part time job not full time and there are less opportunities to promote than men. This means that exist gender gap in a significant amount of payment between men and women. This inequality gives rise to reduce the efficient of working and increase rate of resign. To improve these problem, society make environment for women to reduce oppression of taking care of their children and house working and give more opportunities to participate economic activity. Government has to support the institution for liking after children and encourage cooperate to short working time. If resolved these problem, rate of working women increase, which increase not only GDP of South Korea but also the fertility and status of women in society attain equality of status with men.

Miller Proposal[edit]

With jazz now becoming more popular in our modern times and the ideas of using those themes in pop culture. Jazz has come a long way from where it first started as blues, and work songs down south. Jazz has developed from many genres of music; folk, blues, rag time, swing. This progression of times has had many great artists some more popular than others, but each with their own importance to the jazz world. However most of the artist known of are male, with few female lead rolls. This can be proven by how much was written about the female artist of the times and where they can be found. When looking at Wikipedia you can find very few articles on women in jazz history and if you do they are only little segments of other articles. On the other hand men in jazz have whole articles not only in Wikipedia, but other sources such as books and online periodicals. There has been numerous female artist dead and alive who have influenced the jazz culture. Examples are Billie Holiday, Toshiko Akioshi, Mary Lou Williams, and Maria Schneider. These are only but a few of important jazz artist who need to be recognized for their work and contributions to the times. Jazz can be considered a male dominated society however female artist have been starting to take their places. Other resources used for this are jazz at the Lincoln, online magazine articles, and biographies of artists. Samuel.Miller1101 (talk) 19:53, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Quaintance Proposal[edit]

When first trying to come up with a possible plan of attack for Project 3 I kept coming up blank because even though I find women studies interesting, I do not really love it and do not have an intense passion for it. So instead of choosing a topic from the list provided I decided to go down my route, after my professor recommended that I explore it. The route that he recommended was to find an article concerning women in nursing, considering I am a nursing major and that is my true passion. After spending some time getting acclimated to Wikipedia I finally found a few possible ideas that might work. The first thing I noticed was that there was not a page dedicated specifically to women in nursing; there is a page dedicated to the history of nursing but within that page there is no section specifically on women, they are just put in the appropriate spot in the timeline per say. So the first idea that I might do is to create a new Wikipedia page titled “Women in Nursing.” To attack this idea I plan on researching women in nursing and then summarizing (and citing) the information that I found. Afterwards then I would, with help from the professor, create a new page and insert that information into it. A second idea that I had was to edit some already existing articles about women in nursing. The ones that I would do are: Annie Altschul, Lucy Osburn, and Ellen Doughtery. All three articles just need a little bit of work in terms of information about their early life. That is something that I found weird because it had plenty of information about their past life and their accomplishments. In addition, when you looked each person up you found plenty of information about their early life, that I guess no one has wanted to take the time to incorporate that into the already existing article. By editing all three it will help to fill the word limit set by Project 3, and it will help to make these women better known.Eq021111 (talk) 12:52, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Eq021111. May I suggest that you take a look at History of nursing and History of nursing in the United States (or Nursing in the United States) to make sure there isn't too much duplication of information in your proposed article? Alternately, some of those articles might benefit from more information about how the gendered status (and change in this status over time) of the profession influenced history. As for the latter proposal, I think improving biographies of undercovered women in nursing history is great. Please let me know if you have any questions. Panas Proposal[edit]

After browsing through Wikipedia and thinking about the purpose of Project 3, I decided that I want to edit and contribute to the Wikipedia page for yoga pants. As a female, I understand the popularity and hype behind the spandex workout pants. However, I found that the Wikipedia page does not address the scrutiny attached to them. I also plan to make edits to the current information on the page to include the most beneficial information and eliminate any insignificant information. Yoga pants are designed to fit snugly against the body, making the body’s curves exposed with no excess material to cover. Due to this somewhat revealing nature, many officials, particularly in education settings, have created strict rules or even bans against wearing yoga pants. The chief complaint and driving reason behind their judgments are generally the same: boys are distracted by the girl’s curves thus disrupting the leaning atmosphere. This leads to the heteronormative notion that the male students education and learning atmosphere is more important than the females. The attempt to control wearing yoga pants has recently expanded beyond educational systems. In February 2015, Republican state representative David Moore from Montana proposed a bill that would ban wearing yoga pants in public. Those wearing the workout pants out would be charged with indecent exposure. While it is unlikely this bill will ever make it to become law, the proposal still highlights the disapproval by officials. I want to address these issues because I think the public response and controversy would add to the knowledge base of the current Wikipedia page. I also believe adding in information about the scrutiny of yoga pants will address the gender gap on Wikipedia. I plan to bring awareness to the topic, not just for yoga pants, but also for the general governing of what women should and should not wear. My concern is maintaining neutrality when writing about this topic. Being a female and an avid supporter of yoga pants, I strongly disagree with the restriction of them in public settings. However, I plan to research both sides of the argument to provide the best representation of information to add to the Wikipedia page. Apanas13 (talk) 17:21, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Apanas13. I think this is a great proposal. This is content the article likely needs, although you've got a higher bar to meet given how assiduously sourced the rest of the article is. :) Please let me know if you need any help. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:37, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Long Proposal[edit]

So far the articles I am looking at and interested in working on at Harvey Milk High School, Olympic Sports, and Frozen the movie. When I first clicked on the article ‘Harvey Milk High School’ and read a little bit about it, I thought for sure there would be a controversy section because it is a high school that is designed for LGBTQ people. However, there was not a controversy section. After I did some research I found some articles about the controversy behind the high school and how people living in the south want to open another LGBTQ high school. I feel that adding a controversy section is something I can contribute to this article. With this particular article I am worried about making it sound too biased. I think it is a great idea to have a high school of that demeanor but the research I have done contradicts my beliefs so I am going to have to find an equal balance. When I looked at the ‘Olympic Sports’ article I noticed under “Changes in Olympic Sports” that it mentioned nothing about the gender gap decreasing, specifically in aquatic sports. I am interested in working on this article because I was a swimmer myself for many years and I think that talking about the gender gap decreasing is something important. I am a little concerned thought because I feel like whatever I add will get deleted. I also do not know if the article ‘Olympic Sports’ is too broad to be talking about the gender gap in aquatic sports. The last article I am interested in is Frozen, the famous Disney animated movie. When I was looking at the Wikipedia page for Frozen there is a small section on ‘LGBT parallels’. I think there is a gap that could be filled about how Disney introduced it’s first gay character in the film and how the film pushed the envelope in so many ways. The film demonstrated female empowerment and the whole concept about how you do not need a male hero to save the ending of the film. My concerns are that I am not sure I will be able to write enough about these issues and that my material will be repetitive. Minney Proposal[edit]

Well, if I'm going to do this and not worry about the credibility of my edits, I should probably tackle a subject that I actually know a thing or two about: Film. I've taken several classes that relate to cinema and gender/sexuality, and it brought many things to light that I wouldn't normally think about. How are women and different sexualities portrayed in film and television? What are the problematic consequences that come from these tropes and caricatures? Many film theorists have discussed these important issues that challenge dominant, patriarchal ideas that are constantly used in cinema, but a lot of them do not even have articles on Wikipedia; and if they do have an article, it's very short. I believe many people could benefit from their thoughts and criticisms being put into a concise medium (like this one, duh).

I am not going to edit just one article, if that's allowed. I plan to beef up the articles about Betty Lasky, Mary Ann Doane, and Laura Mulvey and, perhaps, create several articles for other several notable feminist film theorists. Creating a biographical page is going to be difficult for these scholars, especially since most of the notable things they've done is academic research, but I genuinely believe that these things are important. We have to challenge mainstream film that is coded with erotic language, sexism, and heteronormative themes. This is how we can move forward and create a more well-rounded medium that embraces all people. IamnotAJ (talk) 18:32, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Boomershine Proposal[edit]

For Project 3, I would like to create the Wikipedia article for Mary Stack. Mary is a Paralympic powerlifter. She competes in the bench press and her personal best appears to be 125 kilograms (275 pounds), which is an American record. She has competed in multiple events and has multiple articles written about her and her involvement. I think that being both a paralympian and a female in a male dominated sport is highly impressive. Those two categories are well underrepresented in this sport. This article has not been created yet. I think this is due to the lack of women being represented in the powerlifting community as a whole. Female weightlifters in general are very few in existence. That being said, they are growing by the day.As a powerlifter, women have been more up and coming in meets in recent years. Women are generally being welcomed with open arms into the powerlifting community. Girls often are afraid to lift weights for fear of becoming too manly or too bulky. Although Mary is short and has a larger frame, it is due to her medical condition. I have been powerlifting for 4 years now and have been to meets with over 150 other competitors. In the beginning, there would be 2-3 females that were participating. One meet that I competed in in Virginia contained no females. The last two meets I have been to have contained women in the double digits. Their attendance has gone up, and so have the amount of weight they can lift. After going to a meet and seeing girls lifting, my girlfriend became interested in the sport. I think that once women see that they can be strong and not look manly, they become interested in competing and lifting weights. I think that the 1500 word total would be hard to reach for Mary’s article. I would be interested in possibly creating hers and one or two other female lifters, maybe ones that are also underrepresented. I think it would be a fun topic. I might look into editing the main powerlifting page to include more information about women being involved. Eb691811 (talk) 19:46, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Solberg Proposal[edit]

After researching Wikipedia for a while and thinking of possible proposals for a Wiki Project I came up with one in particular that piqued my interest and that is parental leave in Norway. This is currently not an existing, separate article in the English Wikipedia, but I feel like there is a need for a more broad explanation of this. Sweden and Norway (both very similar in their policies) have among the best parental leaves in the world. There is a short paragraph about this in the English Wikipedia article about “Parental Leave” as a part of a short summary of countries legislations on parental leaves but I would like to expand on this topic by either creating a new, separate article or adding a more extended section to the article about “feminism in Norway”. I would especially expand on how Norway has a paid paternity leave with a “daddy quota” and a pregnancy leave. I would use the Norwegian article on parental and paternity leave to find material and possibly translate this, and also do some additional research. I would focus on the history of parental leave in Norway and the political and academic controversies around the topic, as there are many, statistics about popular opinion and a short comparison to other countries. I am interested in contributing to this topic because I think it is important to feminism and also it is very different from the parental leave policies in the US. I am worried that translating in Wikipedia is too difficult and that there are too strict of rules for how to do this. Also I am worried about creating a new Wikipedia article and I am not sure if it would be better to create a new one or add information to an existing article as a section. But a positive aspect is that if I were to create a new article I would not have to worry about people deleting or editing my contributions and I would avoid an “editing war”. Mueller Proposal[edit]

The first step for project three was to choose a topic that I found interesting and at the same time did not have a lot written about it already. I decided to search for articles relating to women in sport and found an article on a Tiffany Bias, who is a professional woman's basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury. The article is still at the stub level, however it has potential to grow substantially. After reading the short article I found a lot of omissions and have a list of ideas that would be able to fill the gaps. Currently there is only a few sentences about who she is and what teams she has played for in the past. Some information that could be added to the article are High school career, college career, awards that she has won, stats from key games she has played in, and her personal life. I have always been interested in sports throughout my life, however I tend to only focus on watching male sports and admittedly do not know much about women's sports and the athletes themselves. This project will give me the opportunity to learn more information about a Tiffany Bias and womens basketball than I did not know in the past. If you type in any NBA players name their Wikipedia page is filled with information and I believe it should be the same for any WNBA players Wikipedia page as well. The most challenging part is going to be understanding and learning all the elements that Wikipedia has to offer. Another challenge that I might encounter will be gathering enough information on Tiffany Bias. She has only played one year so far in the WBNA, so it could be hard to find stats and information on her career. The main goal of this project for me is to put together a Wikipedia page for a woman's professional athlete that shows the respect that she deserves. Needs Proposal[edit]

I’m thinking of writing my project three proposal on Kate Bornstein. The article is controversial because Kate does not define thyself with gender binary pronouns such as he or she. In some of Kate’s earlier books Kate identifies as “she” but then later on comes to realize that for a long period of time Kate was a man and if they identify as only she or her then they erase and entire portion of their life. I’m interested in this article because even though Kate can not change the article themself people who have done reading on Kate’s stories can tell anyone what they prefer to identify by and how they would like to be represented. The article could also use some more extensive work on Kate’s cancer case as well as personal life.

Another article that I thought about writing on Belle Knox formerly known as Miriam Weeks, who is a student at Duke University and a female porn star. She is a controversial topic because of her chosen profession. The article has a lot of missing elements in it one of them being that in her personal life article it does not address her mother and father but it addresses her brother and sister. Her family has separated themselves from her and her identity because they do not like her or her choices but not including them based on personal feelings is not part of a NPOV. I would do some research on her parents and add them into the article as well as fix other issues that I come upon.

Giffin Proposal[edit]

The article I have chosen to edit is Suzanne M. Bianchi. I chose this article because it doesn’t have much on it and I think it is an important page to expand on. Suzanne is an American sociologist who is also connected to gender studies. This page is a stub article so it already has a good start, but it definitely needs more. I think I can add more to the page by adding more to her biography, adding some work she’s done, adding a picture or two of her, more of her career, and maybe more on her early life. One issue I am worried about is finding more information on Suzanne. I am not sure how much information on the Internet there is and how many credible sources I will be able to find. I am also worried about other people commenting or editing my contributions. I don’t do well with conflict, so I am hesitant on this whole assignment. I don’t want people to just erase everything I work hard to add, as soon as I post it. Overall, I think this will be a good article to add to. There is a good start to it so I won’t have to start from scratch. The article definitely needs more information added to it so I think I will be able to help with that. I think Suzanne will be an interesting person to research and it will help add to the gender studies portion of Wikipedia. I am excited to start my contributions, but also hesitant. I think this will be a fun article to edit and add to. Bobcat2015 (talk) 00:42, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Byrns Proposal[edit]

As we explore Wikipedia it has come to my attention that topics related to females are greatly discriminated on. I realized that taking on any large subject field such as feminism and those who are feminists would be very difficult to have approved by the editors of Wikipedia because of the amount of discrimination there is on the website. With this in mind I chose to simply start my own page on someone who would not draw as much attention but would still add a strong female presence to Wikipedia. When I stared the research on the individual I would choose I decided that I want to focus on an up and coming artist that may someday make an impact. The artist I felt I could make the difference is Sara Naomi Lewkowicz. Sara is a young photographer who graduated from Ohio University with a master’s in visual communication. She then went on to get her bachelors in journalism from North Carolina. During her schooling at Ohio University Sara met Shane and Maggie, a couple facing the difficulty of an ex-convict rejoining society. This was the original portrait that Sarah had originally wanted to share with the world. However, the plan had changed one night when Sara and her camera witnessed the domestic violence between Shane and Maggie. The pictures she had captured are moving and completely genuine to the horrifying act. The pictures had later been published in Time magazine to fight against domestic violence. I was surprised when I looked on Wikipedia to see a page for the work of Sara and I found nothing. I would love to cover this story and bring Sara’s amazing work to Wikipedia. The only gap that I found in the story is that Wikipedia still has not covered Sara. I feel that this work she has done is a huge step in the right direction against domestic violence and will be a great step on Wikipedia for women.

Nelson Proposal[edit]

The article I’m going to be working on for my Project 3 is the Butler Bulldogs softball page. My cousin plays for the team and its sports oriented so this should be a pretty interesting project for me. Through looking on Wikipedia there are various pages for Men’s Baseball, Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Basketball and a plethora of other similar sports pages, but for softball doesn't exist. This is interesting to me as well considering that Softball is a female only sport. I’m mostly going to use general existing sports websites to gather my information such as ESPN, Sports Illustrated, the Butler athletics main page and any other source of information that seems applicable to me. I’ll be rewording a lot of the information given off of the other sports pages such as the conference’s Butler has been in, why they switched and several other concepts. This project shouldn't be insanely hard for me, but I do think it will be challenging to write without showing bias towards one side or the other. Matt and I spoke the other day and we agreed this would be a very interesting assignment to work on and definitely falls within the scheme of this class since it is a female’s only sport and it’s blatantly left off of Wikipedia. I’m hoping to put a few of the teams over the last few years, this year’s team, their records, some of the accolades of outstanding players as well. Since there isn't anything printed yet this assignment is very wide open for me which is what I was hoping for. Hopefully I can create a decent page that doesn't get destroyed by other Wikipedia editors.

Nally Proposal[edit]

Project 3 Proposal Nally

For my Project 3, I would like the opportunity to edit the wiki page on Mary Miss. She is an environmentalist artist I have never heard of and her name was on the list for requested expansion. I have read through some cites and articles on her and have found more information on her career and would like to add to her biography. I find what she does interesting because she creates with a purpose. Her purpose is to use her art to create social change and recognition of things in the economy and environment that have gone unnoticed. She creates her work in a way that combines and reshapes boundaries of architectural art. The wiki page on Ms. Miss currently is very vague and does not include much of her studies, training, progress, or current projects. I would also like to write more about her because in the process, I would gain the knowledge of this artist I am not familiar with and would not have known otherwise. I am an art major so it would be fitting if I wrote about an artist that has caught my eye and has the opportunity to inspire me. I would like to learn more about her education and the early life of her career. I would like to know how and why she chose to be an environmentalist artist and what pushes her to make changes in the public sphere. I would like to learn more about her previous work as well as her current. The wiki page on Ms. Miss is fairly short so I feel I will be making a big contribution to this site by doing my research and sharing what I have found. I am worried about the amount of articles and cites I will be able to contribute to my research, I have found two so far that are lengthy but I am not sure if I will need more sources.
