Final Fantasy Tactics is a tactical role-playing game developed and published by Square for the PlayStation console. Released in Japan in 1997 and in the US in January 1998 by Sony, it is the first of the Tactics series within the Final Fantasy franchise. Set in the fictional world of Ivalice, it follows cadet Ramza Beoulve in a war between two noble factions coveting the throne. Newcomer Yasumi Matsuno acted as director and writer, and began production in 1995. He wanted an accessible tactical game with a story focusing on class-based conflict. Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi was producer, and the battles were designed by Hiroyuki Ito. The game received critical acclaim and became a cult classic. It sold about 1.24 million units in Japan during 1997, and over 2.4 million worldwide by August 2011. It has been cited as one of the greatest video games of all time. The world of Ivalice was the setting for other titles, including other Tactics games and the 2006 Final Fantasy XII.(Full article...)
