Thesis titles containing Māori language

I'm working my way through a spreadsheet containing theses where the author has a Wiki bio. The aim is to add the relevant thesis to the article and reference it. So far so good.

I've come across a few theses more than say 20 years old and back then, there was obviously a technical challenge to include macrons. Hence even the thesis titles use double-vowels where we would these days place a macron. What I've done thus far is the following but thought maybe I should check:

Update the Wikidata entry with macrons, using the title as copied from the source as the alternative label.
Use the version with macrons in the Wikipedia article for adding the thesis title.
Use Template:Cite Q for creating a reference, which will thus help itself to the version with the macrons.
And an additional issue (encountered once thus far at Q111963235) is what I assume is a spelling mistake in the thesis title ("Heenare" should be "Henare", but access restrictions won't let me get to the thesis itself so I can't check the source).

That seems a very sensible use of 'alias' for alternative possible spellings of the title. @Zeborah: I'd be interested in a librarian's view about whether an unoriginal macronised version of a title should be the primary label (ie the one that will appear in citations) or whether we should stick to the original double-vowelled one?

With mistakes, my approach has been, where possible, to check the original document. If the mistake is in the metadata rather than the thesis itself, then I correct the mistake for the title and put original as alias. If it is in the original document as well, then I would tend to leave it but enter an additional alias title with the correct spelling. And if you can't check (because restrictions) then I would tend to put what you think is the correct title as the alias rather than the main one (but I'm talking about mistakes rather than double-vowels replacing macrons here). I'm pretty sure that Heenare isn't a thing. Also note that the original gives both a Māori version and an English translation. While the English version keeps the double-vowels for the Māori words, it spells Henare with a single vowel. Schwede 66 09:22, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Scope query

No. To be 'in the project' someone should have supervised or written a thesis that's in the project ie in one of our repositories. There will of course be people who wrote a thesis here but it isn't in the repository, and I don't include them in the project either unless they've also supervised one (this is potentially quite useful for querying how many theses we are 'missing'). We have some overseas dissertations because staff members have submitted to the university library here. We are looking at doing another ingest of theses to update the info, FYI, but not quite sure when that will happen. DrThneed (talk) 22:43, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
