There is an entire traveling exhibit (and picture book) about one style of architecture for meeting houses in some areas just West of Philadelphia. It was displayed at the FAHE (Friends Association for Higher Education) annual conference at Haverford in June 2005.

Apparently there are many styles of meetinghouse architecture that tended to be reproduced with evolutionary changes as Friends migrated West (to Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, etc.) Someone at Philadelphia Yearly Meeting would probably be able to supply good contact info, and perhaps permission for a good photo or two. . . maybe an article of its own?

I remember reading with interest about the meetinghouses that were built to accomodate separated seating for men and for women, and for some meetinghouses, the ability to convert from a gender-segregated to a communal seating system relatively quickly.
