Wikipedia talk:Too much detail
Favoring
[edit]Allow me to start this conversation by saying I cannot emphasize enough how much I favor this project. I will do anything required to promote it permanence in Wikipedia policy. I encourage editors to read the It's a Wonderful Life article to get an idea of what happens when there is a plethora of information available about a subject and people come out of the woodwork to add every bit of information and unnecessary quotation they can find. It reads like information vomit. Not only is the information exhausting and redundant, it is in opposition of what we should be doing at Wikipedia. As editors, it is our responsibility to provide factual information to give the reader an understanding of the subject of the article. The sources we require fulfill two purposes: they verify the information's veracity and they provide a source for the reader to obtain further information. If the reader requires more information, they can obtain it from the sources. Please support this project and let's make it a permanent part of Wikipedia policy. God bless and happy editing! - Hello MarydaleEd! While this admittedly is more of an advice essay I made or supplementary page to policies/guidelines than it is a project of its own, I'm glad you enjoyed the points it conveys and article bloats can be quite bothersome to sort through. Not sure what it would take to formally convert the page into a policy or even a guideline. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 23:35, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how you go about it, either, but I would encourage you to investigate it. You have made a valuable point that needs to be integrated into Wikipedia policy. I believe any veteran editor would agree. Dig in - see what you can find! God bless and happy editing! MarydaleEd (talk) 00:24, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
Close down this project
[edit]This project is way too undefined and problematic at the moment. I see users remove content from pages all the time based on this awful rule. For something like this to be ok there need to be extremely defined rules on what is considered too much detail. In my own opinion there is no such thing as too much detail and i would honestly like to see this project/rule be removed from Wikipedia in its current state.--Blockhaj (talk) 04:07, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- As stated above, it's actually an advice essay. Don't treat it like a project. The whole point of it was to be careful not to bloat pages. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 12:26, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
