Choosing an article
[edit]Hi Paulomi, I took a look at all of the articles again that are available to edit. Of all of the articles I think Exoenzyme and Capping Enzyme are the 2 I lean towards. We each picked one of these articles to write about last week which is good as well I think. I lean towards these 2 articles for a couple of reasons. I think they are both in need of much expansion which gives us a good opportunity to make substantial contributions. In addition, I think they are focused topics so we can really go deep into them versus some of the other articles are very broad topics which seem like it would be much harder to provide an in depth study into them. These are just some of the things I was thinking about, but ultimately I am open to any of the topics, so I am very open to any other topics you many want to work on. Apoptosis81 (talk) 04:20, 14 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi! I think Exoenzyme is a good article to choose. I like the reasons you gave, and that the article outlines some possible examples we may use to expand on the subject, giving us a clear direction. If its ok with you, should I go ahead and claim it as our own and use the above examples as our rationale? Pdholak1 (talk) 09:34, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
- I am having trouble editing the table to claim this article....please help! Also, my time stamp is wrong for my signature, do you know how I may fix this?? I am sorry this I am late in posting on here, Ill be sure to do this assignment before the day its due next time!! Thanks! Pdholak1 (talk) 09:44, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Paulomi! No problem, I just added us as editors of Exoenzyme in the table, so we should be ok there. Your time stamp looks correct in the editing box, but it looks like your second post says it occurred tomorrow. I'm not sure why this would be but maybe the online ambassadors would be able to tell you? If you would like to use those examples as our rationale and type up the paragraph on our project page that sounds good to me...otherwise I can post something in a little while. Apoptosis81 (talk) 09:55, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hey! Ill be sure to ask an ambassador, your time stamp looks wrong too. Weird! Ill go ahead and post a paragraph, and feel free to edit it however you see fit. Thanks! Pdholak1 (talk) 09:59, 15 October 2013 (UTC
- Done! Let me know what you think! Pdholak1 (talk) 10:18, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
- Response from the ambassador regarding the time stamp... "Because Wikipedia is a global project, it operates on Greenwich Mean Time so as not to favour any particular time zone. That way, everyone sees the same time stamps and can make the mental calculations for their own time zones. Don't worry; your signature isn't broken. I hope that helps!" Who knew right?! Pdholak1 (talk) 02:36, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
- Very good! Thanks for posting the rationale to our project page. I think this well captures the points that we discussed on this talk page. That is good to know about the time stamp!Apoptosis81 (talk) 03:28, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
- No problem! On to Unit 7 :) Pdholak1 (talk) 13:14, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Unit 7 Work
[edit]Hey Paulomi, I am headed out of town tomorrow until Monday, so won't be able to do much on the project until I return. I see for this unit we need to start working on our article in one of our sandbox pages. If you planned to work on this before Monday please feel free to add it your sandbox. If not I will be happy to transfer the material to my sandbox page on Monday. Once I get back into town on Monday I will start focusing on this work looking to gather some sources and to start thinking about the outline we have to make. Talk to you soon, James 76.126.127.193 (talk) 05:26, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi James! I may start working on this on Sunday, but no worries Ill talk to you Monday about the outline. Thanks for letting me know! Have a great weekend! Pdholak1 (talk) 21:35, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hey James, here is what I think the outline of our article should look like (please add and change things!): 1. General definition 2. History of discovery (possibly?) 3. Structure/Function in multi organisms - human, fungi, bacteria 4. Examples of HUMAN exoenzymes including amylase, ACE, lipase, digestive enzymes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pdholak1 (talk • contribs) 02:41, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Paulomi, I'm back in town and am going to start working on the project tonight. I think your outline looks good...I imagine we may tweak it as we learn more about it, but I think that will be a good place to start. I will start adding the material to my sandbox page (hopefully that works ok for you). Apoptosis81 (talk) 04:02, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
- I added the necessary sections to my sandbox page: Outline and References. I added a couple sections to the outline and a couple more references to the list. Let me know what you think of these especially the additions to the outline. For the outline, it might make sense to have item #4 be a subsections of #3 and maybe have examples of fungi and bacterial exoenzymes as well. I think the only thing left we have to do for this unit is to add our outline and general ideas to the talk page of the article. Apoptosis81 (talk) 05:20, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hey! Thanks for adding everything to your sandbox...I was having trouble formatting and all (as always)! Ill look into posting the stuff on the talk page... Pdholak1 (talk) 20:24, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
- No worries! Let me know if you need anything from me to post to the talk page Apoptosis81 (talk) 00:10, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
- Just posted it! Feel free to fix anything! Pdholak1 (talk) 01:37, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
- Looks good. I just added a reference section to the post so that the particular references would show up in more detail. Apoptosis81 (talk) 01:49, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
- Good thinking! On to Unit 8 :) Pdholak1 (talk) 03:31, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Unit 8 Work
[edit]Hi Paulomi, I wanted to check with you and see if you had any thoughts on our first contribution to our article for this week? I'm thinking we should try to tackle the initial description and maybe the history. Maybe try to get 2 good paragraphs written with 2 sources per paragraph? We can continue to use my sandbox if that works for you and maybe try to get a rough draft up on the sandbox by tomorrow night? That way Tuesday we will have time for any editing or additions we want to make. I'm open to any other thoughts you may have as well. Do you have any thoughts on how we break up the work, so that we aren't doing redundant things on this? Apoptosis81 (talk) 04:34, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hey! Great idea. Ill do history and you do the initial description...Ill post on your sandbox! I think if we keep splitting it evenly like this, each getting two sources, we should be ok! Let me know what you think. Pdholak1 (talk) 01:30, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
- Sounds good. The instructions of this unit kind of contradict the announcement our professor made last week regarding working in a sandbox and sending the new additions to Turnitin before adding to Wikipedia. I've never used this website before, but don't know if you have? I wonder if we should get something sent over to there ASAP if it takes a day or two to get our stuff back. I have been trying to think of/find a good image to add. My feeling is it may just be an example of a certain type of exoenzyme, but maybe it will be more obvious what picture to use once we get farther into the content adding in the future. Apoptosis81 (talk) 02:17, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

- I just posted my introductory paragraph to my sandbox. Any feedback you have on it would be greatly appreciated. I figure as we add more to the article we may change this paragraph to better reflect the content, but for now I tried to be fairly broad and bring up some of the topics I think we will be addressing. Once your paragraph is ready I guess we just copy and paste it to turnitin.com. I probably won't be able to do that until tomorrow after work (5 PM PST) but I think once that is done we just post it Wikipedia in our article. Apoptosis81 (talk) 03:51, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Paulomi, I submitted our paragraphs to Turnitin.com and their was 0% identification to anything in their databases, so I went ahead and edited the actual Exoenzyme page. I left some of the examples that were already present on the page, but I'm sure we will change those soon. I think all that remains is to post a progress report to out project page. Apoptosis81 (talk) 01:24, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hey James, Im sorry my paragraph is so short, thats literally all I could find! Im hoping to add more as the semester progresses. Im glad we got 0%, thats awesome! Ill write up the progress report. Great teamwork on this Unit! Pdholak1 (talk) 01:39, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- No worries. I actually tried to research some of the history a couple weeks ago and couldn't find much either. I added headings to the Exoenzyme article to try to make it look a bit better. Thanks for posting the progress report! Apoptosis81 (talk) 01:57, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- It looks great, thanks! Next unit we should definitely add pictures! Pdholak1 (talk) 02:00, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- I agree, I'm debating if an image of an exoenzyme (ie 3d representation of amylase) or maybe an image of the process of exporting the enzyme out of the cell or a representation of an exoenzyme working would be the best image to post. Maybe you have a good idea for an image as well? I've been having trouble finding a good image so far. Apoptosis81 (talk) 02:06, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
Unit 10 Work
[edit]Hi Paulomi, I wanted to check in with you regarding our next steps for the article. After reading the assignment for unit 10 it appears like we need to have ~50% of the prose written for this unit. I am thinking the next steps would be to start filling in some of the examples with more detail? I was thinking about doing this work tomorrow unless you have any objections. It would also be useful to add a picture during this unit. Do you have any thoughts on this? I think the reviewers had some good input that might be helpful to us too. Apoptosis81 (talk) 02:43, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hey James, I think that would be great! Do you want to take the first two and Ill take the next two and add stuff about pepsin and trypsin like one of the reviewers mentioned (they are included in digestive but ill be sure to make a note that they are included in the history part)? That should be about 50%! I think we could add pictures for each example and then maybe one of us can add a generic pic of an exoenzyme for the intro. I should work on this no later than tomorrow! Thanks!! 108.34.34.44 (talk) 16:36, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me!Apoptosis81 (talk) 22:27, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

- Hey Paulomi, I wanted to see what you thought about this picture as our main image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Organelles_of_the_Secretory_Pathway.png. I thought it might be interesting to put the overview of something being secreted in a cell (in our case an enzyme). It is a bit general as the things being secreted aren't necessarily enzymes. In our examples we could then have specific images of the enzymes we are focusing on. Have you come across anything? Apoptosis81 (talk) 03:26, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hey! I like the picture! All I can find is a 3D pic of an enzyme...this seems good as a visual of how they are released. Im almost sure, but it is through vesicle transport right? Just checking! And Im sorry to not post anything yet, I am really thankful for that extension...Ill get most of my stuff up tomorrow! Thanks! Pdholak1 (talk) 04:14, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

- No problem! I waver back and forth on the picture I linked above. I think its good but probably not perfect. If you think its good enough we could use it unless we find anything better. I'm not opposed to just putting a 3d image of an enzyme up instead...the only reason maybe this wouldn't be ideal is because we will probably have a couple of 3d images up in the examples. The enzymes all seem to be exported by vesicle transport, but there may be exemptions. This would probably be a good section to write up next though it would probably basically be a summary of this page: secretion . I am planning to write up one more example for tomorrow as well. I am actually traveling to DC later in the week for work, so will not be able to post much Thurs-Sun. Apoptosis81 (talk) 04:41, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
- Sounds good! Im working on my parts and I will keep trying to find pics. As for the examples, I found this website that shows petri dishes with bacteria marked for each enzyme they secrete that might be good to use so we dont have too many 3D proteins! Attached is the link. Have fun in DC! http://academic.pgcc.edu/~kroberts/web/exoenzymes/exoenzymes.htm Pdholak1 (talk) 23:09, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Paulomi, I just uploaded a second example to the wiki and added the main picture. I think it is starting to look pretty good. I was going to check if you would be able to post our progress for this unit once you add your sections? I think it is mostly going to be prose and image additions. I will keep my eye on our pages in case there is anything I can add, but I won't be able to do any major posts until I'm back from my business trip. Thanks! Apoptosis81 (talk) 05:09, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hey! Ill definitely do the progress. I think its looking good too! Ill add the sections on pepsin and trypsin plus another image and we should be good for this unit. Did you see our grade for the last one?? I'm kind of disappointed we only got .5 for the content, but hopefully this one will be better! Pdholak1 (talk) 23:05, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
- Just put our two paragraphs in turnitin.com...no similarity! yay! Pdholak1 (talk) 23:11, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hey again! So I added a picture of the activation of pepsin in Wiki and followed the process. I don't think there should be a copyright issue because I filled out the form right? Just want your opinion because Im not sure how that works! Thanks! Pdholak1 (talk) 00:17, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Paulomi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I just got back from a business trip today and am trying to catch up on things. Thanks for posting the progress report too. I think the the Wiki site is looking pretty good. After we add a couple more sections I think we will be pretty much done with the prose side of things. I believe that if you fill out the necessary forms everything should okay copyright wise. Apoptosis81 (talk) 23:49, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hey James, no problem! Hope you had fun. Sounds good about the picture, and I think we are on our way to finishing! Yay! Pdholak1 (talk) 04:01, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Unit 12 Work
[edit]Hey Paulomi, I think we are in the final stretch of our article and just have a few more sections to include. Based on our original outline we still need to add: structure/function in multiple organisms (human, fungi, bacteria), ecological impacts of exoenzymes, and biotechnological/manufacturing impacts of exoenzymes. I think I have some good references I have been collecting for the biotech/manufacturing section and can work on that if that is okay with you. For the structure/function section, how should this be written? I'm not sure if we wanted to talk about structure/function of individual exoenzymes as it starts to overlap with our examples from humans. I was thinking if we talked about how the enzymes are produced, packaged and secreted in each of the different organisms that might be good...we could even just compare/contrast prokaryotes and eukaryotes. What do you think? I will probably try to get a lot of the writing done over the weekend coming up. Apoptosis81 (talk) 17:58, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hey James! Sorry for the delay in responding! I think its great if you work on the biotech section, I can try to work on the structure/function in organisms. I think the best way to do it would be to do subsections for each type of organism...honestly I am not sure of the differences yet so once I do some research I'll see what works better and then run it by you! Ill work on this later today. Thanks! Pdholak1 (talk) 16:54, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
- No problem! I am starting my additions now and am hoping to add about 3-4 paragraphs. The structure in different organisms will probably be pretty similar but the functions will probably be different when comparing bacteria to humans for instance (at least in so far that the enzymes in humans are usually found in certain organs, etc). One thing that might be worthwhile is comparing how the enzymes are secreted between different organisms...that may be something that makes sense to add to the section you are putting together, but let me know what you think. The next section I am thinking about adding after the Biotechnology/Industry section is regarding Bioremediation and Ecological impacts. Apoptosis81 (talk) 03:16, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Paulomi, I added a couple paragraphs to the biotechnology section and will probably add at least one more, but I wanted to check with you regarding any feedback you may have for this section so far. I added a picture that shows the chemical reaction of biodiesel generation and I think it looks pretty good. I also resized the top image to be a bit larger...I think it looks better. I wanted to check with you to see if you were going to add content under Trypsin in the Examples section? If not I will probably erase that header. Also do you think we should keep the "See Also" section? This was a hold over from the original version of this article and I'm not sure it is really adding anything. Apoptosis81 (talk) 04:04, 26 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hey James, I was just reading your section! I think it looks great - full of wikilinks and the picture looks good too! During this unit Ill add the trypsin description and do the structure/function section. I don't think we need the "See Also" section to be honest, so lets go ahead and take it out. I don't think Ill be able to post till tomorrow because I had a really long day at work, but rest assured I am working on it and will have everything posted tomorrow! Thanks!!Pdholak1 (talk) 04:25, 26 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Paulomi, I uploaded my additions to Turn it in and it came back 5% match which is still ok I think. I'm wondering if it is because I added some to Wikipedia over the last few days and maybe come of my work was already in their database. I cleaned up the article a bit too and removed the "See Also" section and also went through and disambiguated a number of our wikilinks throughout the article. I created the progress report for this section, but I imagine you will have some to add to it. Thanks! Apoptosis81 (talk) 04:04, 27 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hi James, thanks for doing the progress note. Im having a horrible week, thank you for being patient with me! I am going to work on this section more up until Friday just to make sure that I have done what I said I would! Ill keep you updated. Thanks again! Pdholak1 (talk) 04:58, 27 November 2013 (UTC)
- No problem! I'm sorry to hear about your bad week. Please let me know if I can help with anything on the project. I'll keep updating the Biotechnology section in the next couple weeks and plan to add a section on Bioremediation using exoenzymes and I think that will about finish up my contributions. Apoptosis81 (talk) 03:40, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Unit 14 and Final Work
[edit]Hi Paulomi, I was just checking in to see what you thought our final edits to the article should be? I'm planning to add 3-4 more paragraphs this week in anticipation of the final week next week. My paragraphs will be additions to the Biotechnology section and to add a new section on Bioremediation. If you have any other thoughts on things we should add please let me know. Thanks! Apoptosis81 (talk) 05:54, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
Hi Paulomi, I hope you are doing well. I wanted to let you know that I am almost done with my additions to the article and only have one more paragraph planned to add to the Bioremediation section. I was hoping to see if you still planned to add your sections to the article? I'm getting a little concerned that I have not heard from you since Nov. 27th and I think our article is incomplete without the sections that you had planned to add. I think going into the final week we are supposed to have basically all of our content added and just make final tweaks in the last week, so just hoping for an update on your work. Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to help. Apoptosis81 (talk) 03:01, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hi James, I am SOOOOO sorry I just disappeared there for a bit. Between the holiday and getting sick and keeping up with other classes, I just dropped the ball on this wiki page. I am truly sorry to do that to you. But I will add the section on the exoenzymes in different organisms, and I was thinking about adding the assays to find exoenzymes that one our peers mentioned in their review. What else should I add? I PROMISE to get the majority of it done today - working on it right now! I am so sorry again. Thanks for being so patient with me. The things you added look great by the way! Let me know how else I can help. Thanks!! Pdholak1 (talk) 18:42, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hey, I added the bacterial assays section. Let me know what you think. I am having trouble figuring out if I can use the pictures on this website http://academic.pgcc.edu/~kroberts/web/exoenzymes/exoenzymes.htm to put in our article..what do you think? Thanks! Pdholak1 (talk) 20:47, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
- I also added the section on function. I am going to turn the virulence factor section into one resembling the digestive enzymes but will do so tomorrow. I also have to add wikilinks! Should we still add a section for structure? Pdholak1 (talk) 04:31, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Paulomi, I just read your additions and they really add to the page. I think the page is starting to look pretty complete now. I'm going to add one more paragraph on bacteria and bioremediation tonight and then I think I am pretty much done adding major content. I took a look at the webpage you linked (that one actually came up in a lot of my searches too)...it look like it is a Prince George Commumity College site, so my first inclination is we can't use it without the permission of someone there. I think the images look a bit too blurry to use too. A better option might be to search open access journals like PlosOne for images related to research. I did a search for amylase plate assays and found this article: http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0068092 . Figure 2 is a starch clearance assay that is pretty clear and matches your description well though this one is circles vs. streaks. I think structure as a separate section might be too hard to add at this point and may not add too much to the page as I believe the structures of the different enzymes are very varied. If anything maybe we can add a line or two on the structures of some of the examples that we already have up (ie amylase, trypsin, etc). What do you think? Apoptosis81 (talk) 04:00, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hey James! I will def look for better pictures, thank you for the link! I also like the idea of adding the structure to the individual enzymes. Im glad you like my additions. Ill knock out the virulence factors tomorrow. Overall I think we're almost done! Minus the week I went AWOL (sorry again), I think we did really well! :) Pdholak1 (talk) 04:01, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hey! Added the pictures for the assays and our page had a flag saying that we had too many "diambiguous wikilinks" so I went ahead and fixed those. Just ahve to work on the virulence factors section, should be done by tomorrow night! Pdholak1 (talk) 00:18, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Paulomi, Thanks for disambiguating the links. I've gotten that notice a couple times too and have gone through the tool, but more links must have accumulated. I think the assays pictures look really great and the article is definitely looking good overall! Apoptosis81 (talk) 03:17, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- I was reviewing some of the comments from people in the class and see that one thing wikipedia requires is that text touches at least one side of the article. For the new assays section this wasn't the case, so I reformatted this so that the text would touch one side. I'm not sure how this looks now as there are some large gaps around the images. What do you think? We could move the amylase image up to the top and that would alleviate some of the gaps I think. Apoptosis81 (talk) 03:48, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hey James, Im glad you like the pictures! I see what you mean about the text touching the sides though and then the gaps. To fix this I turned the images into a multiple image block...let me know what you think! I think I may add a couple pics in the virulence factor spot as well. As for the structure I was thinking, do you maybe want to add a sentence or two to your intro? I am coming up short as to what exactly we should say. Let me know what you think! Anything else we need to do before we finalize it? :) Pdholak1 (talk) 16:32, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
- You know how our main picture shows organelles involved in exoenzymes leaving the cell...do we need to add a description of this anywhere? Maybe we can talk about the production instead of structure? Pdholak1 (talk) 16:37, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
- The image block looks great! The virulence factor section also looks really good. My original thought is that we would talk about how the exoenzymes were secreted (like in the header image) in the section about exoenzymes in different organisms since the different cells (ie bacterial and eukaryotic) secrete them differently. I'm not sure we have time to add that section at this point, but what do you think? I think the only sentences that potentially need to be added to the intro are the sections we didn't originally plan for (virulence factor and assays I think). - Hey! Thanks Im glad you like it! I just added the extra sentence in the intro about the virulence factors and assays...I will add a sentence or two about production in the cells under function. Overall I think it looks great!! Yay! Pdholak1 (talk) 17:37, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- Just added some stuff under function, please take a look and let me know what you think? Should I add a picture there? Then all thats left is the progress report! Pdholak1 (talk) 18:19, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hey, just put our entire article in Turnitin.com and 25% was because I put in your part as well (lol) and there was 1% that was cited from an article. Its the sentence "In the food industry these enzymes are used in the generation of fruit juices, fruit nectars, fruit purees and in the extraction of olive oil among many others". You may want to just reword it a little! Im just going to add our Unit 14 update...are we done? Pdholak1 (talk) 23:31, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- I think so! I just went through the article and did a few minor edits and aligned some images a bit differently. Thanks for posting the update! Apoptosis81 (talk) 00:05, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
- Awesome! Thanks for being a great partner - I enjoyed working with you! Have a great break :) Pdholak1 (talk) 01:02, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
