Wikipedia talk:Village pump (proposals)/Account security
A lot of people seem intent on re-inventing the wheel here. A lot of these issues have been discussed, repeatedly, in the past. It would help if some people could do some reading on past discussions/debates/bug requests before proposing things that are (a) already implemented; or (b) planned to be implemented, but just lack developer resources currently. bugzilla:16435 and related bugs should be read and studied.
It's also important to note that some developers have actively called for users to use weaker, easier to remember passwords, as the value of most Wikipedia accounts is next to nothing (cf. bugzilla:25925#c7). I realize this will come as a shock to the hundreds of idiots who have created "public" alternate accounts, but really, your unprivileged Wikipedia account has zero value to the outside or inside world. --MZMcBride (talk) 16:17, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
- My personal view is that we shouldn't be worrying too much about accounts being compromised—really the only "useful" ones would be CU/steward, and they're all smart enough to use strong passwords—but given that many users think that inactive sysops should have their tools removed, surely it would make more sense to target the underlying issue rather than a side effect. I was aware of some of the current implementations of these proposals (e.g., mw:Extension:SecurePasswords) but I don't know how close they are to being rolled out or whether the community approves (despite the devs having the final say). /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 17:17, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
This is probably a dumb question, but is there a simple code that would make the Comments not have individual edit links, so [edit] would be hit from the main headings? I tried <h3>, but that didn't do it (I couldn't tell in preview as edit links never show up there). Every comment someone makes just shows as "Comment". Not vital, of course, just makes the conversation easier to follow. ▫ JohnnyMrNinja 15:25, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
