Organizers?

[edit]

Excellent initiative! Who is responsible for making it happen? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:55, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's the judging panelists, acting on behalf of ISCB and in coordination with WikiProject Computational biology. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 11:09, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am quite interested in knowing what made ISCB take note of the WikiProject. Usually such traditional organizations hardly realize they can edit Wikipedia, not to say there are WikiProjects they could collaborate with? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 11:28, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Some society members are Wikimedians and talked about it to other members. Plus, there is the Wikipedia manuscript track in the journal run by the same society. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 11:34, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Editing doubts

[edit]

Hi! I'm very enthusiastic with this competition. However, I've some doubts because I had never edited on Wikipedia so it will be a challenge for me! Can I change the text that already exists in the page I'm editing (delete and change text) even if they're major changes? Or should I propose the changes first? Also, can I change the current scheme of the page (change topics order, include or delete topics)? Thank you. --JulianaCF (talk) 19:58, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First, welcome to Wikipedia, to WikiProject Computational Biology and to the ISCB competition! Second, yes, you can change what is already there, and all changes will be recorded in public and can easily be undone, so you can't break anything. Third, if you are not sure, it is always a good idea to ask around - well done on this one. Fourth, a good part of an article's structure is defined in the Manual of Style, which is worth a look in that regard. Fifth, planned larger changes of an article's structure should first be laid out on the article's talk page. If there is no objection within a reasonable period of time (say, a week), you can go ahead, otherwise try to respond to the objections. Sixth, take a look at some related articles (or other language versions) to see how they handle the topic or related ones. Seventh, WikiProject Computational Biology has a talk page too, where you can ask such questions and get input from the wider community working on articles in this area. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 21:24, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My claimed article is claimed (and now largely edited) by other contestant(s)

[edit]

Hi, I've been inactive in Wikipedia for quite some time due to other activities. Thanks for your reminder email. I just found out yesterday that my claimed article (comparative genomics) has been expanded by someone else, and I saw that the same person claimed the same article a few months back (perhaps around 1 month after I made my claim). And even another guy (or at least someone with another username) claimed the same article approximately at the same moment as the previous person. I wonder if the competition rule allows this. I'm not complaining or anything since I believe I'm not eligible anymore in the competition as I'm not a student anymore. Can I still edit the article (as a contestant)? Thanks. sentausa (talk) 13:40, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think as long as you can provide evidence that you were eligible to participate when you claimed the article, your participation will count as valid. I invalidated the re-claims here but could well imagine that you could form a happy team with the other two. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 01:45, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thank you. It might be a good idea. And have a great new year! sentausa (talk) 09:34, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Next competition and 2013 winners

[edit]

Hi! I saw great improvements in some pages so congratulations everyone. This is actually an excellent initiative and I really appreciated to enroll this competition. Are you planning another one for this year? Also, are the winners of 2013 competition already known? If not, when will it be announced? JulianaCF (talk) 11:50, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
