This Punjabi girl was introduced to the movies by the noted director, Priyadarshan, for his Hindi film Doli Saja ke Rakhna, opposite Akshaye Khanna. Though the film did not do well at the box office, she was noticed by the Tamil and Telugu industry. She was immediately signed for a Tamil Film 'Vaalee' where she did a guest appearance with Ajith Kumar & Simran in 1999 and that film was major hit. Actually she later confessed that she was offered the main role of Simran in Vaalee but she refused it for Doli Saja Ke Rakhna and instead opted to do a guest appearance in Vaalee.

Her first Tamil movie as a heroine is Poovellam Kaettupaar with Surya and this film gave way to her for a very successful film career in Tamil. She then gave another hit movie with Ajith Kumar with 'Mugavaree'. Then came the biggest hit of her career and arguably her best performance ever in 'Kushi' directed by SJ Suryah (who had also directed Vaalee). This movie starring Ilayathalapathy Vijay, Jyothika and Vivek was a mega blockbuster and crossed 175 days and ran very successfully. Jo's character in this film was that of an egoistic lover who was in love but was filled with ego and had a lot of clashes with her lover. The story is about how two people meet, fall in love, get start fighting over a small issue and then in the end re-unite.

She got the opportunity to act with Kamal Haasan in 'Thenali', an opportunity which she considers a honour! Even her sister Nagma who was a very popular Tamil actress couldnt act with Kamal Haasan. Jyothika's most famous films followed with Dum Dum Dum, Snehithiye, Star, 12B, etc. However, a lean period started for her with Star as she was accused of putting on too much weight and looking fat. Her movies flopped during the period of 2001-02 starting with Star, 12B, Raja, etc.

Then came the second innings of her life which she wont forget! Her first release of 2003, Dhool starring Vikram, Reema Sen and Vivek was the first blockbuster of 2003 and pushed Jo back to the top of the industry. She shared a great chemistry with Vikram in Dhool and all the songs were blockbusters and the movie ran over 200 days! 2003 was a fantastic year for Jo as she had another big hit with the Surya starrer Kaakha Kaakha. She played Maya, a teacher in the movie. Her chemistry with Surya is the best ever that she is involved with. Of course, there are rumors and gossips still circulating that she is to tie the nuptial knot with Surya. She also had Thirumalai with Vijay which was also a superhit in 2003!

Then she had Perazhagan in 2004 for which she received awards. She played for the first time in her career, a double role in the movie where one role was that of a blind girl. She received the Dinakaran Best Actress award for her performance. She also acted in the super-hit Manmadhan with Silambarasan in 2004. She had a very good chemistry with Simbu even though he is younger to her.

Then after a forgettable Mayavi, came the movie that has changed her life Chandramukhi. This movie starring the Ultimate Superstar Rajnikanth with whom Jyothika was dying to work with, is the biggest commercial hit of all time in Tamil Cinema and the role that Jyothika got is the best ever role that she has got in her career. She played a housewife possessed with a split personality! Her acting in the climax sequences in this film wont be forgotten by anyone who has seen this film! Especially her gruntling "Laka Laka Laka" will be remembered forever. She has to be commended for it because she was able to win over the applause in a Rajinikanth movie.

Her recently released movie is Saravanaa opposite Silambarasan for Pongal 2006. Her forthcoming movies are
