License tagging for Image:Griffin Family Tree.jpeg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Griffin Family Tree.jpeg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 20:06, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

I see OrphanBot noted that you initially lacked a tag for this image. I have just tagged it as BadJPEG (which, if you aren't aware, means it is innappropriate to be JPEG, and another format would be much better, not that the information is bad) and have also tagged it as ShouldBeSVG, see SVG if you don't know why. But the reason I have come here is to ask if you have any basis as to why you believe this image is copyrightable. The tag you specified suggests you believe it is, but I believe otherwise. The idea and layout of a family tree is common property, therefore that in itself is not applicable for copyright. The only other element which could be considered copyrightable that I am aware of, is the information. In this case, if the information is applicable for copyright (which I strongly doubt it is) the copyright would fall to Fox, not you. In short: as far as I can tell, the only possible element which could possibly be copyrightable, is the info (which isn't yours).
In conclusion, I would suggest (I'm not forcing you to, it's just a suggestion based on my analysis of the situation) that you tag it {{PD-ineligible}}, which would give this:
Public domain
This image is ineligible for copyright and therefore is in the public domain, because it consists entirely of information that is common property and contains no original authorship.
