SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE

According to Dr. John Gottman, sexual harassment is a subtle rape, and sex is more fear than rape. In today’s workplace sexual harassment takes place on a regular basis, and it is geared towards both males and females, but mostly females. Female employees who encounter sexual harassment are usually new to the workplace or they are in a position that is usually male dominated. Sexual harassment, at first, are usually taken lightly and it is often viewed as a sign of attraction by the harassed or as an awkward social interaction and it may be months or years before any report of being sexual harassed may be reported.

Sexual harassment can be presented to an employee in many ways. Employees may be bribed or threatened to engage in a sexual act or it may be use as a tactic of control, that is, to show who is in charge. Sexual harassment has different start times for different employees. For some, it is when a colleague discusses his personal life instead of talk about work related topics and for others it is at the moment when they were inappropriately touched. But whatever the case, sexual harassment is wrong and should be prevented.

Employees need to feel secured and comfortable at work. Hor or to the Human Resource department so that it can be properly dealt with. No employee should be left feeling uncomfortable or embarrassed at work because of unwanted and disrespectful attention.

Edit Wars

Edit Wars occurs when editors of Wikipedia disagree about the content of another editors and continuously over edit each others edit. Edit war is not constructive and even cause hatred between editors and it can also lead to an editor being blocked or banned from Wikipedia. However, editors can get to undue there edits. This is know as the three-revert rule and is also referred to as the bright light. The revert rule simple means undoing the action of another editor. With the three revert an editor cannot undue more that three edits within 24 hours whether its to different articles or the same. However, there is an exemption to this. An editor can revert edit his/her own user page (self-reverting), revert edits to pages in their own user space as long as the user page guidelines are respected. An editor can revert the actions performed by banned users and sockpuppets of blocked users. An editor can removed edits that constitute vandalism and edits that violates copyright. They can remove illegal content under the US law and the removal of biased, libelous or poorly source materials. alos, it is best when an editor seek help when they have notice that edit wars are taking place and let the administers decide who to block or banned from Wikipedia.

An example of an edit war on Wikipedia has occured on the United States Army page. In this edit war, editors are editing and re-editing the edits of other editiors. Editors are reverting the edits of other editors because of vandalism, of overlinking and they revert the edits of information that theuy believed is incorrect. These revert edits by the editors are allowed because acroding to the three-revert rules an eiditor isw allowed t make edits to another persons article or edit if it constitute vandalism and some of the revert edits made by editors were done because of vandalism.

EMPLOYEE TURNOVER IN THE WORKPLACE - (WIKIPEDIA EDITS)

Employee turnover is the rate at which an emplyoee leaves the organization; it can be voluntary or involuntary. Employee turnover is often a result of job dissatisfaction. Job dissatisfaction can be in the form of:

  • Low pay
  • being supervise too much
  • not enough responsibility
  • unfair treatment by managers
  • not properly trained for the job
  • Organizational commitment
  • lower sales and profit

When job dissatisfaction is present employees will not be estatic to contine with their job; their main goal is to quit. Also, when employees leave an organization, whether voluntary or involuntary, it is very costly for the organization. This is due largely to the fact that after someone leaves a replacement must be recruited, selected and trained and given a probationary period in which to gain experience with the job. Despite turnover being costly for the organization, it can also prove to be better for the organization. When turnover occurs it is mostly employees who perform unsatisfactorily who leaves the organization. Therefore, even though it is costly to hire new employees the organization benefit when poor performing employees leave.

The problem of employee turnover can be dated as far back to the early 19 century. Many scholars, over the years, have developed different models to assess the rate of turnover in the workplace and the cases of these turnovers. Some of these models of turnover includes the:

  • Cusp catastrophe model of turnover
  • Causal modl of turnover
  • unfolding model of turnover

These models of turnover, along with others, have been used over the past decades to determine the main contributors to turnover. Once managers are able to assess what are the underlying factors of turnover, they will be able to undersatnd what the employees want and needs and be better able to prevent future tunover.
