Notes 1 The U.S. Census Bureau definition of Asians refers to a person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent. [1][2] 2 The United States Government classified Kalmyks as Asian until 1951, when Kalmyk Americans were reclassified as White Americans.[3] 3 The U.S. Census Bureau considers Mongolians, Kazakhs, Turkmens, Tajiks, Kyrgyz, and Uzbeks as Central Asians,[4] but a specific Central Asian American group similar to Middle Eastern American does not yet exist.[5] 4 The U.S. Census Bureau reclassifies anyone identifying as "Tibetan American" as "Chinese American".[6] 5 Bengali Americans may be classified as Bangladeshi or Indian.[7] Punjabi Americans may be classified as Indian or Pakistani.[8] Tamil Americans may be classified as Indian or Sri Lankan. Pashtun Americans may be classified as either Afghan or Pakistani. 6 Those of West Asian extraction (i.e. the Middle East and the Caucasus) are classified as White under the U.S. Census. | ||
