John Seigenthaler Sr. is a journalist, writer, and political figure. He founded the First Amendment Center in 1991.

Siegenthaler was editor of The Tennessean for 43 years, and later became president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. He was founding editorial director of USA Today.

Leaving his newspaper briefly in the 1960s, Seigenthaler was as administrative assistant to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. During his civil rights negotiation work in Montgomery, he was attacked by Klansmen.

Seigenthaler is the author of a biography of President James K. Polk.
