Hysterotomy
ICD-9-CM68.0
MeSHD020883

A hysterotomy is an incision in the uterus, and is performed during a caesarean section.[1] Hysterotomies are also performed during fetal surgery, and various gynaecological procedures.[citation needed]

In fetal surgery, without inhibition of uterine contractions, premature labor is a complication that occurs in 100% of hysterotomy cases.[2] It can be inhibited by anti-contraction medications.[3]

Risks and complications

A caesarean section is conducted depending on the situation of the mother and fetus during birth and surgeon preferences. The main deciding factor is what the safest route of delivery is for both the mother and the fetus. Complications for the mother include maternal blood loss, maternal postoperative pain, anaemia due to continuing blood loss, postoperative pain, fever and possible wound infection. Postoperative complications for the mother may include breastfeeding issues, difficulty passing urine, future fertility problems and/or complications in future pregnancies including uterine rupture.
