Introduction
Generation Global is a global citizenship education programme for young people. It offers an online platform where learners ages 13-17 can learn about global issues and interact with peers in online spaces.
This programme is centred around intercultural dialogue and provides resources for young people to learn 21st century skills, including critical thinking, questioning, active listening, global communication, and reflection.
The programme also provides teaching resources on a range of global topics, and trains educators on how to use dialogue pedagogy in the classroom.
The programme claims to have reached over 600,000 young people and trained over 15,000 teachers from 40+ countries.
History and development
The programme was launched within the Tony Blair Faith Foundation in [[2009] under the name Face to Faith. In 2016, it changed its name to Generation Global, as part of a transition from the Tony Blair Faith Foundation to the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change.
One of the main resources for educators is the Essentials of Dialogue, published in 2016 and later updated in 2022 as an introduction for teachers to the dialogue pedagogy. In 2016, the University of Exeter conducted an impact evaluation which assessed the effectiveness of the programme and its activities[1][2]. In 2020, in response to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the programme launched a new platform for young people called the Ultimate Dialogue Adventure[3]. Initially developed to allow remote participation during school closures, it evolved into a comprehensive learning platform for young people globally. In 2023, Generation Global launched a mobile app, designed to work as a companion to the Ultimate Dialogue Adventure.
Philosophy
The programme believes intercultural dialogue is at the heart of meaningful human connections and young people’s ability to authentically engage as global citizens. The programme's dialogue pedagogy consists of a set of five core skills[4]:
- Global Communication: The ability to speak authentically when communicating across cultures by sharing personal stories, values, and perspectives and respecting differing or challenging views of others.
- Active Listening: The ability to listen to others, understand what they are saying, and show empathy and recognition.
- Critical Thinking: The ability to evaluate, analyse and interpret information about self, others, and the world.
- Questioning: The ability to inquire for deeper understanding, inclusion of all voices, and to move the dialogue forward.
- Reflection: The ability to evaluate and assess our own and others experience of dialogue and the impact it has on our own development.
Generation Global claims that participating in online facilitated dialogues helps young people to develop their dialogue skills and repeated encounters with peers from different countries reduces their prejudice and builds their open-mindedness[5].
Resources
Ultimate Dialogue Adventure
The Ultimate Dialogue Adventure[6] is an online learning platform for young people to develop five core dialogue skills, explore 15+ global topics, and build intercultural connections with global peers. The platform is accompanied by a Generation Global mobile app.
Teacher Portal
The Teacher Portal[7] is an online platform for educators. Teachers can access educational resources, book video conferences for their students and participate in online professional development courses.
Video conferences
Video conferences are facilitated online encounters between young people ages 13-17. Students can book themselves into these sessions after completing the corresponding topic on the Ultimate Dialogue Adventure.
Presence and recognitions
Generation Global claims to have a presence in more than 40 countries[8][9][10], and has been the subject of a number of academic papers[11][12][13]. The programme is a member of the UNESCO Global Education Coalition[14] and a partner of the UNESCO Global Skills Academy[15]. They are listed as a winner of the 21st Century Learning Awards at the Bett Asia Awards 2023[16] and as one of the top 100 education innovations as part of HundrED's Global Collection 2022[17].
