W Motors is an Arab-Lebanese hypercar company founded in 2012, being the first developer of high-performance luxury sports cars in the Middle East. Based in Dubai, the company is fully integrated with activities including Automotive Design, Research & Development, Engineering and Manufacturing. W Motors also performs Automotive Consultancy within its Special Project Operations division.

Led by Founder & CEO Ralph R. Debbas and a management team, W Motors creates limited production vehicles in partnership with leading automotive engineering and manufacturing companies from around the globe including Magna Steyr, Studiotorino, RUF Automobile and AKKA Technologies.

W Motors name and vehicles take inspiration from the “Wolf”. Claiming “The Wolf is W Motors spirit animal. Embedded within the brand DNA, the wolf’s ferocity drives not only the power and performance elements of the hypercars, but also the wild and aggressive designs.”

The first hypercar created by W Motors was the Lykan HyperSport, which featured in Universal Studios' Furious 7. With only seven cars in existence, the Lykan HyperSport is handcrafted and sports a full carbon fiber body, a patented reverse dihedral door system, a jewel-encrusted key with diamond-lined headlights, and a “holographic” interactive display. The Lykan HyperSport is priced at $3.4 million.

Written with a “k”, the W Motors’ Lykan takes its name from an advanced species of wolves in mythical legends.

The all-new Fenyr SuperSport is the latest hypercar to be launched by the company, a limited edition with a production run of only 100 cars in addition to 10 Fenyr SuperSport “Launch Editions”. Featuring a reverse-opening door system and active aerodynamics. The Fenyr SuperSport’s exterior body is crafted in carbon-fibre with extensive use of graphene composite. The custom-made RUF engine was specially developed – a twin-turbo flat 6, mid-rear 3.8L engine capable of delivering 800HP. Making it possible to reach 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and a maximum top speed of 400 km/h. Prices start at $1.4 million.

The Fenyr Supersport was named after ‘Fenrir’, a monstrous wolf in Norse mythology.

All Lykan HyperSport vehicles are sold out and delivered, delivery of the Fenyr SuperSport models began at the end of 2018. An all-new model is set to launch in 2019.

In addition to developing its own supercars, W Motors developed the first vehicle for China-based sister company ICONIQ Motors - the ICONIQ Seven, a fully electric multipurpose vehicle.

In line with W Motors’ strategy to expand and strengthen its presence both in the Middle East and internationally, the company will commence Phase One of the development of its production facility in Dubai in 2019 with the project set to be completed at the beginning of 2020. The state-of-the-art facility will accommodate the production of W Motors’ current and future models including electric and autonomous vehicles, in line with Dubai’s vision of becoming the “world’s smartest city”.

The new facility will join the W Motors’ Dubai-based Design Studio and its flagship Gallery.

History

Development of the W Motors brand took seven years.[3][4] European auto manufacturers Carrozzeria Viotti, Magna Steyr, RUF Automobile and StudioTorino were involved in W Motors's development.[3][5] Initial investment topped US$13 million,[3] some of which came from FFA Private Bank of Lebanon, who became a stakeholder in the company.[4] W Motors founder Ralph Debbas has a master's degree in automotive design.[4]

W Motors was founded in Lebanon in July 2012.[6][7]

W Motors launched its first prototype model, the Lykan HyperSport, at the Qatar International Motor Show in January 2013.[8] Shortly thereafter, the company moved its headquarters to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).[4]

Also in 2013, Universal Studios ordered twelve Lykan HyperSport stunt cars to appear in the film Furious 7,[4] one of which is available for public viewing at Car Vault in Dubai. It is the most expensive car ever featured in the Fast and the Furious films,[9] though the vehicles seen on screen do not have the carbon fiber chassis, diamond accents or other super-luxury touches that production models of the Lykan HyperSport do. The Lykan HyperSport's first pre-production model debuted at the Dubai International Motor Show on 5 October 2013.[8]

Other venues where the Lykan HyperSport was displayed include the Dubai International Boat Show[10] in the United Arab Emirates; the Historical, Vintage, and Classical Cars Museum[11] in Kuwait; and Cohen&Cunil[12] in Marbella, Spain.

The road-ready model of Lykan HyperSport premiered at Top Marques Monaco in April 2014.[7] The Lykan HyperSport officially went on sale in December 2014.[13] Officially limited to 7 units,[5][4] the HyperSport is priced at $3.4 million and is manufactured in Torino, Italy.[3][9]

Founder Debbas announced in April 2015 that W Motors would be opening an automotive design academy, W Design School, in 2017. Also in April 2015, Furious 7 debuted, featuring the Lykan HyperSport.[5]

Project CARS, a motorsport racing simulator video game developed by Slightly Mad Studios and distributed by Bandai Namco Games, released the Lykan HyperSport as its first downloadable content (DLC) vehicle in May 2015.[14] As of 2016, the Lykan HyperSport has also been included in eleven other video games, including Driveclub and Forza Motorsport 6 in January 2016 as DLC.[5][15]

In June 2015, the Abu Dhabi police force purchased a Lykan HyperSport.[16][17]

Present

W Motors has a three-person automotive design team as of 2012, all graduates of the transportation design degree program at Coventry University.[6] It operates several facilities in Europe, with its main production facility in Torino, Italy,[4] and has collaborated with international partners and suppliers from the automotive industry, including Magna Steyr, StudioTorino, Ruf Automobile, Novasis Ingegneria, ID4Motion,[18] and the University of Tokyo in the technical field, and Franck Muller Watches and Quintessentially Lifestyle Concierge Services in the luxury field.[8]

The company's second model, the Fenyr SuperSport, debuted in November 2015.[4] Two SUV models, which will be built in the UAE and have a price range of US$200–300K, were set to debut in April 2016, at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.[4] A sedan, whose model name has not yet been announced, was scheduled to debut in 2015 or 2016; it will have a US$200,000 retail price.[5]

W Motors planned to relocate its factories and manufacturing facilities to the port city of Jebel Ali in the UAE sometime in 2016.[4][13] The plant was expected to make over 200 cars per year by 2017, when production of the sedan and SUV lines will have begun.[19] It would have been the first automotive manufacturing facility in the region with on-site R&D, including a test track.[13] W Motors confirmed in September 2017 that the facility would instead be built by 2020.[20]

The company also revealed in September 2017 that the Fenyr SuperSport’s road-legal model would debut in November of the same year, along with the opening of a new showroom in City Walk 2. They also teased a new model, set to be revealed in 2018, which will be priced around US$500, 000 and will compete with the likes of the Lamborghini Aventador SV or the Ferrari F12.[21]

Lykan HyperSport

The Lykan HyperSport is powered by a flat 6-cylinder 3.7-litre (3746 cc) twin-turbo mid-rear engine, developing 780 hp (582 kW; 791 PS) and 960 N⋅m (708 lb⋅ft) of torque,[22] claiming 0 to 100km/h in 2.8 seconds with a maximum speed of 404 km/h (251 mph).[23] It features a holographic display with interactive motion and tactile interaction. LED headlights are made up of a titanium blade encrusted with diamonds and the taillights with sapphires. A 24-hour concierge service is also available from Quintessentially.

Fenyr SuperSport

Fenyr SuperSport at Geneva Motor Show 2018

In 2013, W Motors announced it would manufacture a second line of supercars, that was later unveiled as the $1.85 million Fenyr SuperSport, named after Fenrir, a monstrous wolf in Norse mythology. This supercar, with production limited to 25 units per year, [16][24][25] focuses on high-performance and more discreet luxury details when compared with the ones Lykan HyperSport is known for.[24] The Fenyr SuperSport concept featured a 4.0L twin-turbocharged Flat-6 with 900 hp (670 kW; 910 PS) and 811 lb⋅ft (1,100 N⋅m), with a 0–60 mph performance time of 2.7 seconds, and a top speed over 249 mph,[24][26] and a curb weight of approximately 2,646 lb (1,200 kg).[27] The Fenyr Supersport was unveiled at the 2015 Dubai International Motor Show.[4] On November 29, 2017, with the opening of the new W Motors boutique in Dubai, the production version of the Fenyr SuperSport was revealed, with many changes from the concept.[28]

The production version of the Fenyr SuperSport features a 3.8L twin-turbocharged flat-6 engine with 800 hp (597 kW; 811 PS) and 723 lb⋅ft (980 N⋅m), as much torque as a McLaren P1. 0 - 60 mph (97 km/h) is still 2.7 seconds, while the top speed is now 259.338 mph (417 km/h). As the Fenyr now weighs 2,976 lb (1,350 kg), it has a power-to-weight ratio of 593 hp (442 kW; 601 PS) per tonne. Normal suicide doors are also featured instead of the unique suicide-swan doors from the Lykan HyperSport. Only 25 units will be produced per year.

The Fenyr SuperSport was being developed in concert with an eco-friendly racecar program fostered by Quimera, an electric-car manufacturer.[26][27]

Possible future projects

Lykan Roadster

Only three of the forthcoming Lykan Roadsters will be sold out of the 5, as 2 will be used as crash tests at Texas Speedway.

W Motors released an image of the front of a vehicle similar to the current Lykan through their Instagram page, with the caption, "Can you tell what is different about this Lykan?" and, later, another from the rear, captioned, "From this angle can you tell what's the difference? Only a few of you got it right on the last post ..." Many fans saw this as possible hint that the project will go ahead. The vehicle appeared to have more carbon fibre body parts; however, W Motors later posted that, "[the difference] is scale...". The photos were of a 1:18 die cast model by Frontiart.

Fenyr SuperSport HSF

A racing version of the SuperSport, the Fenyr SuperSport HSF, will use what W Motors is calling a "hybrid synthetic fuel" and be carbon-neutral.[26][29]

Luxury Sedan

An as-yet unnamed sedan model was scheduled to debut in 2016. An estimated 100 sedans per year will be produced, each costing approximately US$50,000.00 The sedan's premiere was planned for the September 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.[5] It is unknown if this model will be released.

Luxury Sport Utility Vehicle

Two as-yet unnamed SUV models, which will be built in the UAE and have a price range of US$200–300K, were set to debut in April 2016, at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.[4][failed verification] One model will have a sports-car-like focus on speed, while the other is designed to be "an off-road luxury car."[4][failed verification] Unlike the more exclusive HyperSport and SuperSport models, W Motors plans to produce more than 100 units of their SUV models per year, with a significantly shorter order-to-delivery time than for their custom-built sports cars.[4][failed verification] The designs were released to CNN in 2015. It is unknown if these models will be released.

Autonomous Vehicle

An autonomous passenger vehicle designed by W Motors and codenamed "MUSE" will be presented at Auto Shanghai 2019. The concept was presented at the brand's showroom in February and claims an L5 automation level and Dubai-based production. [30]
