The 2011–12 South Carolina Stingrays season was the 19th season for the South Carolina Stingrays in the ECHL. Cail MacLean did not return for a third season as South Carolina's head coach, having accepted an assistant coaching position with the AHL's Abbotsford Heat.[1] Former assistant coach Spencer Carbery took the reins in his first season as the team's head coach and director of hockey operations.[2] Rob Concannon returned for his second season as the Stingrays' president. Former Ohio State University ice hockey assistant coach J.B. Bittner joined the organization as assistant coach.

Team captain Matt Scherer rejoined the Stingrays for his fifth consecutive season and his third as captain. Also re-signing with the Stingrays for his fifth season was forward Trent Campbell. Veteran enforcer and fan favorite Nate Kiser was not offered a contract for the season and announced his retirement from professional hockey. The Stingrays inducted him into the team's hall of fame on the opening night of the season.

The season opened on October 14, 2011, with a 4–3 overtime victory at home against the Reading Royals. The Stingrays met their in-state rivals—the Greenville Road Warriors—in two pre-season contests, on October 7 and 8, falling to the Road Warriors in a shootout in Greenville and in regulation play in North Charleston.

The Stingrays finished the season with a record of 37–28–4–3, earning 81 points and ending up fourth in the South Division and seventh in the Eastern Conference. They maintained their league record for most playoff appearances, advancing to the Kelly Cup playoffs for the 18th time.[3]

Pre-season

June

The Stingrays announced their protected list (the list of players whose rights the team retains) on June 2, 2011. It consisted of goaltender Shane Owen; defensemen Nate Kiser, Zach Jones, Derek Keller, Bryan Schmidt and Zach Tarkir; and forwards Trent Campbell, Matt Scherer, Rob Ricci, David de Kastrozza, Pierre-Luc O'Brien, Maxime Lacroix, Chase Langeraap, Sean Dolan, Tommy Goebel, Brock McBride, Ryan Del Monte, Luke Popko, Chase Watson, and Keith Johnson.[4] Of the players on the protected list, only three (Watson, Johnson and Tarkir) were not on the season-ending roster the team issued on June 16.[5]

On June 15, Rich Peverley became the first former Stingray to win the Stanley Cup following the game seven shutout of the Vancouver Canucks by the Boston Bruins. Peverley skated with the Stingrays during the 2004–05 season, scoring 30 goals and 28 assists in 69 regular season games as well as two goals and two assists in four playoff contests. He played with the Nashville Predators and the Atlanta Thrashers prior to being traded to the Bruins during the 2010–11 NHL season.[6]

In late June 2011, Joe Finley and Josh Godfrey—both of whom played for the Stingrays during the 2010–11 season—were not given qualifying offers by the Washington Capitals, making them unrestricted free agents effective July 1.[7]

July

On July 1, the Stingrays extended qualifying offers to eight players from the previous season's roster: forwards David de Kastrozza, Maxime Lacroix, Brock McBride, Sean Dolan, Chase Langeraap and Rob Ricci, defenseman Derek Keller and goaltender Shane Owen.[8] De Kastrozza and Lacroix played the majority of the 2010–11 season with the Stingray's AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears. Ricci was the Stingrays' top scorer for the previous season, putting up 26 goals and 28 assists for a total 54 points. McBride was the top scorer in the post-season, netting two goals and two assists for a team-high four points in the playoffs. Owen finished the previous season with a 2.45 goals against average (GAA), the team's lowest.

The team announced on July 7 that three members of the organization would attend the Washington Capitals' rookie development camp. The group included team equipment manager John Williams, forward Dmitri Kugryshev, and defenseman Dustin Stevenson. Kugryshev dressed for three games with the Stingrays during the 2010–11 season, then spent the majority of the season with the Hershey Bears. Stevenson played in 63 games with the Stingrays for the 2010–11 season, scoring three goals and nine assists for 12 points.[9] Additionally, it was released that former Stingrays forward Rob Ricci would not be returning to the team for the 2011–12 season, having signed with the Odense Bulldogs of Denmark's AL-Bank Ligaen.[10]

On July 14, the Stingrays announced that their affiliation with the Washington Capitals had been renewed for the 2011–12 season.[11] The same day, Capitals' officials announced that rookie goaltender Philipp Grubauer would be expected to spend the majority of the 2011–12 season with the Stingrays. Grubauer was the Capitals' fourth-round draft pick in the 2010 NHL draft and won the Memorial Cup and the OHL championship in 2010 with the Windsor Spitfires. He played for the OHL's Kingston Frontenacs for the 2010–11 season, finishing with a .903 save percentage and two shutouts.[12]

The team announced on July 21 that head coach Cail MacLean would not be returning to the Stingrays for the 2011–12 season, having accepted the assistant coaching position with the AHL's Abbotsford Heat. Previous Stingrays head coach Jared Bednar served as Abbotsford's assistant coach during the 2009–10 season.[1] The next week, assistant coach Spencer Carbery was named the team's sixth head coach and director of hockey operations, making him the youngest head coach in the ECHL.[2]

On July 29, Heilbronner Falken of Germany's 2nd Eishockey-Bundesliga announced that they had signed former Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford for the 2011–12 season.[13] Ford played for the Stingrays from 200911, playing in 50 regular season games with 1316 saves and 136 goals against for a 2.77 GAA and a 0.906 save percentage. He recorded three shutouts in his time with the Stingrays.

August

The Stingrays announced their first player signing for the 2011–12 season on August 5. Team captain Matt Scherer returned to the Stingrays for his fifth consecutive season. Scherer first joined the team for the 2007–08 season and has recorded 107 combined points in 247 regular season games and 6 assists in 45 playoff games during his tenure. He was named the team's seventh captain during the 2009–10 season.[14]

On August 11, Brock McBride—who had been extended a qualifying offer by the Stingrays in July—signed with the Belfast Giants of the United Kingdom's Elite Ice Hockey League.[15] The next day, the Stingrays announced their second and third signings with rookie forwards Sean Dolan and Chase Langeraap. Dolan and Langeraap both joined the team at the conclusion of the previous season and made appearances in the playoffs.[16] Forward Joe Cucci, who also skated briefly with the Stingrays at the end of the 2010–11 season, signed with the Reading Royals on August 17.[17]

The first outside free agent acquired by the Stingrays for the upcoming season was forward Matt Pope, whose signing was announced on August 19. Pope joined the team from the AHL's San Antonio Rampage, with whom he skated for 55 games in which he earned 4 goals and 7 assists during the 2010–11 season. Pope previously played in the ECHL with the Bakersfield Condors, with whom he turned pro in 2008. He was selected as a starter for the 2009 ECHL All-Star Game and was named to the 2009 ECHL All-Rookie Team.[18]

The AHL's Binghamton Senators announced on August 23 that they had signed former Stingrays defenseman Josh Godfrey.[19] Godfrey, who skated with the Stingrays from 2008 to 2011, represented the team at the 2011 ECHL All-Star Game and Skills Competition, where he set the league record for hardest shot at 102.7 miles per hour (165.3 km/h).[20] The next week, defenseman Dylan Yeo, who skated with the Stingrays from 2009 to 2011, signed with the Ontario Reign.[21] The same day, the Stingrays re-signed rookie defenseman Nick Tabisz. Tabisz appeared in three games with the Stingrays the previous season, scoring his first professional goal and tallying one assist.[22]

September

On September 2, the Stingrays announced they had signed former defenseman Zach Tarkir. Tarkir skated with the team from 200810 and was part of the 2009 Kelly Cup championship team. He was named a starter for the American Conference team for the 2010 ECHL All-Star Game. Tarkir spent the 2010–11 season with the Hannover Indians of the 2nd.Bundesliga.[23]

The team announced its pre-season schedule on September 6, comprising a home-and-home series versus the Stingrays' in-state rivals, the Greenville Road Warriors. The first game is scheduled to take place at the Bi-Lo Center on October 7, with the following game at the Carolina Ice Palace (the Stingrays' practice facility) on October 8.[24]

Derek Keller, who received a qualifying offer from the Stingrays in July, re-signed with the team on September 9. The defenseman joined the Stingrays at the end of the 2009–10 season and spent the majority of the 2010–11 season out with an injury. Keller scored 2 goals and 12 assists in 29 games with the team during the previous season.[25] One week later, the Stingrays re-signed forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien. O'Brien skated with the Stingrays for every season since 2007–08 except one (2009–10) when he played for the 2nd.Bundesliga's Fischtown Pinguins. He was a member of the 2009 Kelly Cup championship team, scoring 6 goals and 13 assists in 23 games during the playoffs.[26]

On September 17, former Stingrays forward Tommy Goebel signed with Aquile FVG of Italy's Serie A. Goebel skated with the Stingrays for the majority of the 2010–11 season and accrued 52 points in combined goals and assists in regular season play.[27] The next week, the team announced that former professional ice hockey player and Ohio State University assistant hockey coach J.B. Bittner had been named the Stingrays' new assistant coach. Bittner spent three seasons at Ohio State as assistant coach following a three-year professional career in which he saw time in both the ECHL and the AHL.[28] That week also saw former Stingrays forward Ryan Del Monte signing with the Kalamazoo Wings,[29] as well as defenseman Joe Finley being listed on the roster for the Buffalo Sabres' training camp.[30]

Former Stingrays defenseman Patrick Cullity signed with the Utah Grizzlies on September 22.[31] The next day, the Stingrays announced that they had re-signed forward Trent Campbell and signed forwards Jerry Pollastrone and Vyacheslav Trukhno. Campbell, who has skated with the Stingrays since 2007, tied for the team's highest plus/minus rating (+14) the previous season. Pollastrone joined the team from the Las Vegas Wranglers, with whom he spent the past two seasons, while Trukhno came to the Stingrays from the Bakersfield Condors after skating with the Springfield Falcons from 200710 and spending a short stint with the Peoria Rivermen under former Stingrays head coach Jared Bednar.[32] Trukhno had signed with the KHL Medveščak of the Austrian Hockey League on September 22, leaving the Stingrays with his ECHL rights.[33]

The Stingrays' South Division rival Gwinnett Gladiators signed former forward Nikita Kashirsky on September 28. Kashirsky, a member of the 2009 Kelly Cup championship team, split his time between the Stingrays and the AHL over the previous three seasons. Last season, he netted 26 points in combined goals and assists in 34 games with the Stingrays as well as 2 goals in 14 games with their AHL affiliate Hershey Bears.[34] The Stingrays announced the next day that they had signed defenseman Johann Kroll and forward James McEwan. Kroll—who first joined the Stingrays in 2008—came to the team as an unrestricted free agent from the Hershey Bears following a season split between Hershey and South Carolina, while McEwan signed on after two seasons with the Ontario Reign.[35]

On September 30, the Utah Grizzlies released their training camp roster, which included former Stingrays goaltender Shane Owen.[36] Owen joined the Stingrays at the end of the previous season and was the last of those players given qualifying offers to sign with a team.

October

The Stingrays saw their first assignments from AHL affiliate Hershey Bears on October 1. The Bears assigned goaltenders Daren Machesney and Philipp Grubauer, forwards David de Kastrozza, Danick Paquette and Maxime Lacroix and defenseman Phil Oreskovic to South Carolina. Forward Matt Pope also returned to the team from Hershey's training camp.[37]

On October 2, the team announced their plan to induct fan favorite and former defenseman Nate Kiser into the Stingrays Hall of Fame on the opening night of the season (October 14). Kiser, a seven-year veteran who joined the team in 2004, finished his career with the Stingrays as the team's all-time penalty minutes leader (1,131 PIM) and with the third-most games played (412). He was selected by the Phoenix Coyotes as a fifth-round draft pick in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft and turned pro with the ECHL's Dayton Bombers, for whom he skated during the 2003–04 season. Kiser also played short stints in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch, Portland Pirates and Albany River Rats.[38] The next day, Kiser revealed that he had not been offered a contract for the upcoming season and announced his retirement from professional hockey.[39]

That same day, the Stingrays made their first trade of the season, acquiring the rights to forward Chris Higgins from the Las Vegas Wranglers in exchange for future considerations.[40] Higgins scored 16 total points in 21 regular season games with the Wranglers and 20 combined points in 21 games with AS Renon of Italy's Serie A during the previous season.

On October 5, two days before the first pre-season game against Greenville, the Stingrays acquired six players: forwards Chris Higgins (whose rights the Stingrays received in a trade with Las Vegas on October 2) and Joe Pereira from Tingsryd of Sweden's HockeyAllsvenskan and defenseman Sam Lofquist from the AHL's Houston Aeros, as well as defensemen Garrett Mitchell, Paul Baier and Dustin Stevenson (who skated with the team the previous season) assigned from the Hershey Bears.[41]

The Stingrays met the Greenville Road Warriors in two pre-season contests, falling 3–2 in a shootout at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville on October 7 and taking a 2–1 loss in regulation play at North Charleston's Carolina Ice Palace on October 8.[42][43]

Conference quarterfinals (Round 1)

The seventh-seed Stingrays faced the second-seed Gwinnett Gladiators in the first round of the 2012 Kelly Cup playoffs. The best-of-five series began at the North Charleston Coliseum, where the Stingrays shut out the Gladiators 3–0 in game one, but Gwinnett evened the series with a 3–2 victory in game two.

Play moved to the Arena at Gwinnett Center for the remaining games of the series. Game three was the longest game in franchise history and the second longest game in ECHL history, ending four minutes and nineteen seconds into the fourth overtime period with a goal by Zach Tarkir for a 4–3 victory for the Stingrays.[46] Washington Capitals prospect Dustin Stevenson scored his first goal of the season early in the third period to tie the game at 3–3, sending it to overtime periods. Stingrays goalkeeper Rob Madore, who joined the team an hour before the game started due to Daren Machesney being recalled to the Hershey Bears, made 54 saves on 57 Gladiators shots.[47]

The Stingrays eliminated the Gladiators and advanced to the conference semifinals with a 4–3 victory in double overtime in game four. Forward Maxime Lacroix scored the game-winning goal (his second of the game) with less than four minutes remaining in the second overtime period.[48]
