Barbara Piévic[1] (born 10 April 1993), known professionally as Barbara Pravi, is a French singer, songwriter, and actress. After signing with Capitol Music France in 2015, she released four extended plays with the label: Barbara Pravi (2018), Reviens pour l'hiver (2020), Les prières (2021) and Les prières : racines (2021). As a songwriter, Pravi has written songs for a number of artists including Yannick Noah, Julie Zenatti, Chimène Badi and Jaden Smith. She additionally composed the song "J'imagine" by Valentina, which won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020.

Pravi represented France in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the song "Voilà", securing 2nd place, the best result for France since 1991.[2] Her debut album, On n'enferme pas les oiseaux was released on 27 August 2021.

Early life

Barbara Piévic (Serbian Cyrillic: Пјевић, romanizedPjević) was born in Paris on 10 April 1993.[3] Her family consists primarily of artists and musicians, being surrounded by paintings and music since childhood. Pravi's father is of Serbian and Algerian Jewish descent, while her mother is of Polish Jewish and Iranian origin.[4] Pravi's maternal grandfather is the Iranian painter Hossein Zenderoudi.[3][2]

Career

2014–2018: Early career

Pravi began her music career in 2014, after meeting French musician Jules Jaconelli. With Jaconelli, she began composing songs. The following year, she released an original cover, "Amour Impoli",[5] which led to her signing a contract with Capitol Music France. She adopted the stage name Barbara Pravi from the Serbian word pravi (Serbian Cyrillic: прави, lit.'real', 'authentic', in the masculine), as a homage to her Serbian grandfather.[6] Upon beginning her professional recording career, Pravi performed on the soundtrack of the French version of the Swiss film Heidi with the song "On m'appelle Heidi" and afterwards was cast as Solange Duhamel in the musical show Un été 44 [fr] in November 2016, performing songs written by Jean-Jacques Goldman, Charles Aznavour and Maxime Le Forestier.[7][8]

In 2017, Pravi released her first official single "Pas grandir".[9] The single was later included on her self-titled debut extended play, which was released the following year. Also in 2017, Pravi starred in the television film La Sainte famille, as the role of Marion,[10] was later broadcast on France 2 in December 2019.[11] From 2017 until 2018, Pravi performed on the 55 Tour, supporting French singer Florent Pagny.[12] At the end of 2018, Pravi decided to alter her musical style by adopting a more traditional French chanson style, rather than the pop music that had dominated her early releases.[13]

Along with writing and composing her own songs, Pravi has written for several other artists including Yannick Noah,[14] Julie Zenatti,[15] Chimène Badi,[16] Jaden Smith,[11] Louane and Florent Pagny.[17]

2019–2021: Eurovision Song Contest

In 2019, Pravi first became associated with the Eurovision Song Contest after composing the song "Bim bam toi" for French teen singer Carla, composed with French musician Igit. The song represented France at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Gliwice, where it placed fifth.[18][19] After the contest, the song also went on to become a success on TikTok.[20] Following the success of "Bim bam toi", Pravi later released her second extended play Reviens pour l'hiver in February 2020.[21][22]

In 2020, Pravi and Igit wrote the French Junior Eurovision entry again. Their song, "J'imagine" performed by French child singer Valentina, represented France at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Warsaw. "J'imagine" went on to win the competition, becoming the first French entry to win Junior Eurovision.[23][24]

Later in 2020, Pravi was announced as one of the contestants in Eurovision France, c'est vous qui décidez!. She competed in the final on 30 January 2021 with the song "Voilà", composed by herself along with Igit and Lili Poe.[25][26] Pravi went on to win the competition with 204 points, and thus represented France in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam.[27][28] She finished in second place, scoring 499 points, thereby achieving France's best Eurovision result since 1991. She had reportedly been asked by France Télévisions to be a candidate for the Eurovision Song Contest for years prior, but had declined the opportunity due to feeling as if she was not ready.[29]

2021–present: Post-Eurovision ventures

In July 2021, Pravi announced her first international tour for her debut studio album, On n'enferme pas les oiseaux (English: We don't lock up the birds), which came out on 27 August 2021.[30][31]

Pravi performed "Voilà" as an interval act at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021, which took place on 19 December in Paris.[32] Pravi also performed the song "L'homme et l'oiseau" (English: The man and the bird) at the 37th edition of the Victoires de la Musique, where she went on to win the Female Revelation of the Year award.[33][34]

On International Women's Day, 8 March 2022, Pravi released "Priére pour soi" (English: Prayer for yourself).[35]

On 13 July 2022, Pravi released "365", which is dedicated to all the fans who have supported her in the past year.[36]

On 28th October 2022, Pravi was announced as one of the French songwriters for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 for Lissandro’s song « Oh Maman! ».
