[edit] Early life, education, and career

Ellsworth, the second of four children, was born in Tooele, Utah in 1954. His father worked as a computer programmer at Tooele Army Depot, despite only having his high school degree. Ellsworth began work at an early age, racing horses in Nevada from age 12 to 17. He later went on a two year mission to Mexico City in 1975 with the LDS Church. After completing his mission, he entered Brigham Young University, graduating magna cum laude in 1977 with a BA in Communications.[3]

In 1980, Ellsworth joined the securities firm of Dean Witter Reynolds. He later worked at the firms of Wilson-Davis Securities and Prudential-Bache. He has worked in finance for over 25 years. In 2004 Ellsworth founded Green Plains Renewable Energy (NASDAQ: GPRE). Green Plains currently produces approximately 740 million gallons of clean burning ethanol and employs nearly 650 Americans[4] and is currently the fourth largest producer of ethanol in the world.[5]

[edit] Campaign platform

One of Ellsworth's primary goals is to restore regulation and stability to Wall Street.[6] He believes that Congress's deregulation of Wall Street was the main cause of the 2008 housing bubble and subsequent recession. He believes that Congress should reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act and repeal the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, and the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000--the bill that made it illegal for anyone to regulate the derivatives market within our banking system.

Ellsworth contends the middle class should be rebuilt by repealing the Bush Tax Cuts and addressing national income inequality. Another of his main calls to action is the 13% unemployment rate in Nevada, the highest in the United States, and the 180,000 jobless Nevadans.[7]

[edit] 2012 U.S. Senate election

Ellsworth officially announced that he will run for the United States Senate January 2012 to succeed John Ensign, who resigned amid an investigation of an ethics violation in May 2011.[8]
