Beaufort railway station is located on the Serviceton line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the town of Beaufort, and it opened on 11 August 1874.[1]

History

Beaufort opened as the temporary terminus of the line from Ballarat. On 7 April 1875, the line was extended to Ararat.[1]

It was disestablished as a staff station on 14 September 1988,[2] with the signal box, interlocking and signals abolished. The electric staff sections Trawalla - Beaufort and Beaufort - Buangor were also abolished, replaced with the electric staff section Trawalla - Buangor.[3] In May 1989, two loop lines that formed a rail yard were removed.[4]

In October 1993, station staff were withdrawn, with platform seats also removed in that month.[4] On 27 May 1994, the station closed when road coaches replaced trains between Ballarat and Ararat.[4]

The station building and signal box underwent a restoration in 2000, to make it suitable for community use.[4] By August 2003, upgrades to reopen the station were complete.[4] On 11 July 2004, the station reopened when V/Line passenger services to Ararat resumed.[5]

The former station building was converted into a community arts centre in October 2014, whilst the former goods shed is currently used as a steam-era museum.[6][7]

Disused stations Burrumbeet and Trawalla are located between Beaufort and Wendouree, while disused station Buangor is located between Beaufort and Ararat.
