Cardiomegaly is a medical condition wherein the heart is enlarged.

Classification[edit]

Dilation or hypertrophy[edit]

Cardiac dilation is where mainly one or more heart chambers is enlarged, while cardiac hypertrophy is where mainly cardiac muscle is enlarged.

By location[edit]

Clinical Information •Abnormal enlargement of the heart. •Enlargement of the heart, usually indicated by a cardiothoracic ratio above 0.50. Heart enlargement may involve the right, the left, or both heart ventricles or heart atria. Cardiomegaly is a nonspecific symptom seen in patients with chronic systolic heart failure (heart failure) or several forms of cardiomyopathies. •Hypertrophy or enlargement of the heart.
