I disagree with the merge to parent "Variable" category. The concept of variable in computer programming is different from that in mathematics. This category should be kept as a separate category. Andreas Kaufmann (talk) 08:55, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that category "Variable" has a "Hidden variables" subcategory (about quantum mechanics). If we merge "Variable (computer programming)" to "Variable", then we will also make "Variable" as a subcategory of "Programming constructs" (like "Variable (computer programming)" currently is). But then navigating from "Programming constructs" you will go into "Variable" and then you can go to "Hidden variables". But "Hidden variables" have nothing to do with programming! Current structure doesn't have this problem. Andreas Kaufmann (talk) 11:27, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you, you have managed to convince me. The only remaining issue then is to remove the code Category:Mathematics from the "Category:Variable" page, since "Category:Variable" contains articles and subarticles about Computer Science, Quantum Mechanics and, only for some sections of the Variable article and no other article, Mathematics. This will not cause a problem since the article Variable already belongs to Category:Elementary mathematics. I am going to do this now and remove the merge boxes from both Category:Variable and Category:Variable (computer programming). Thanks for the constructive discussion. --Antonielly (talk) 12:24, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
