"I'm Glad"
Song

"I'm Glad" is the third single from Jennifer Lopez's third studio album, This Is Me... Then (2002). Released in 2003, it did not follow the success of her previous two singles, peaking at number thirty-two on the Billboard Hot 100, though its remixes by Paul Oakenfold, Ford, and Murk became club hits in the United States, propelling the song to number four on the Hot Dance Club Play.

Background and release

After the success of the previous singles "Jenny from the Block" and "All I Have", with the latter topping the Billboard Hot 100 charts, it was announced that "I'm Glad" will be released as the third single on August 7, 2003.[1]

Composition and lyrics

The song was written by Lopez, Cory Rooney, Troy Oliver and Andre Deyo and produced by Troy Oliver and Cory Rooney. It samples Schoolly D's 1986 song "P.S.K. What Does It Mean?", written by Jesse Weaver, Jr..[2]"I'm Glad" is a contemporary R&B song, with elements of dance-pop and soul.[3] The song talks about finding the right person, after a long time. In the pre-chorus, she exhales deeply: "I think I'm in love/Damn, finally!".[4] It was reported by Face Up magazine that her former boyfriend Ben Affleck played "I'm Glad" when he proposed to her.[5]

The song begins with a sample of Schoolly D's "P.S.K, What Does It Mean." After nearly a minute, Lopez then talks about first meeting someone and thinking she could date him. ("Baby when I think about/The day that we first met (the day that we first met)/Wasn't looking for what I found/But I found you/And I'm bound to/find happiness in bein' around you").[5] In the chorus, she's crowing about sleeping with him and that he's the best boyfriend ever, ("I'm glad when I'm makin' love to you/I'm glad for the way you make me feel/I love it 'cause you seem to blow my mind/Everytime"). She likes that he likes rap and lavishes her with affection. ("I dig the way that you get down (you get down and thugged out)/And you still know how to hold me.") In the bridge, she's pleased that she's found someone who loves her. ("I'm glad/that you/turned out to be/that certain someone special/who makes this worth living.") By the end, she doesn't want him to leave her. ("So say that you won't leave/'cause since the day you came/I'm glad.")[5]

Critical reception

"UK Mix" wrote a positive review, calling the song "a standout track, backed up by great beats and simple lyrics."[6] While another review for "UK Mix" wrote a negative review, writing that "it's fairly catchy, but it's certainly nothing special."[6] The website "Epinions" called it "a lovely, well produced gem."[7] "Traveling to the Heart" wrote that the song "is the only listenable tune on the entire album. However, it's marred by Lopez's boasting of landing a boyfriend with an Oscar and delusions of millions of people caring what she does in her private life."[5]

Music video

The music video was directed by David LaChapelle. The choreography by Jeffrey Hornaday was adapted from his work for the 1983 film Flashdance starring Jennifer Beals, whose character, Alexandra Owens, is also a construction worker by day and an exotic dancer at night. Lopez wore an outfit similar to that Beals wore in the actual film and she also stated that this was one of her most complicated videos and that a lot of effort was put in it. The video received four nominations at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards: Best Female Video, Best Dance Video, Best Choreography, and Best Art Direction.

The song was slightly remixed for the video adaptation.

The recreation of scenes from Flashdance led Maureen Marder—whose life was the inspiration for the storyline of the film—to sue Lopez, Sony Corporation, and Paramount Pictures for copyright infringement in November 2003, claiming the video was an unauthorized depiction of her life story.[8] The lawsuit was dismissed in June 2006.[9]
