[edit] Organization
Division III was originally formed out of the lowest ranked teams of Pool D when the IIHF reorganized its World Championships hierarchy in 2001.
The two national teams that finish last in their groups at the IIHF World Championship Division II are relegated to Division III for next year's World Championships. At the Division III Championship, the two best placed teams are promoted to next year's Division II Championship.
Depending on the number of teams wishing to take part in the championship, the IIHF may organize an IIHF World Championship Division III Qualification tournament. However, in 2010 the number of teams will be expanded from six to eight and there will be two groups of four instead of one group of six teams.
