The Ingmar Bergman Award is a retired Swedish film award, which was distributed between 1978 and 2007. It was instituted by legendary Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman, as a complement to the Guldbagge Awards.[1] The jury consisted from the beginning of Ingmar Bergman and the CEO of the Swedish Film Institute.[1] The recipients were awarded a bronze plaque, depicting Bergman's face, and a sum of money.[1]
The award was first presented at the 14th Guldbagge Awards, and presentation ceased after Bergman's death in 2007.[2]
History

The award was primarily intended to honour achievements in Swedish film which had not otherwise been considered when the Guldbagge Awards were handed out.[2] As a filmmaker with a extensive experience, Ingmar Bergman was aware of how filmmaking required a delicate cooperation between many different people.[1] He knew how important each profession is for the finished result, and that the film that reaches the audience is never better than the weakest link in this complex teamwork.[1] Bergman never, by no means, forgot the often overlooked categories of film workers.[1] The aim was therefore to pay attention to all these professions rarely received attention in connection with the awarding of the main awards.[1]
The jury comprised Ingmar Bergman himself and the CEO of the Swedish Film Institute.[2] It was first awarded at the 14th Guldbagge Awards, and was handed out to the film editor Wic Kjellin, by the departing CEO of the Swedish Film Institute, Harry Schein.[1] From this ceremony and the 42nd Guldbagge Awards, the award was presented annually, except for the years 1984, 1989 and 1990. The Award soon covered the entire filmmaking process, and the term "farm to table" applies here in an obvious way, as the price has gone to everything from script students at the Dramatic Institute to a legendary projectionist in 1986.[1] The projectionist in question was Henry Nyberg, who began his career in 1932 at the Trocadero, and ended it in 1981 at the cinema Röda Kvarn.[1]
The award has also been presented to other types of filmmakers: screenwriter, costume designer, makeup artist, script girl, studio manager, production manager, lighting director and cameraman.[1] Only three actors or actresses have won the award: Lena Olin, Gunnar Björnstrand and Mikael Persbrandt.[1]
The Award
The award consists of a sum of money (SEK 60,000 at the latest listing) and a bronze plaque with the Bergmans face in relief, made by the Finnish sculptor Eila Hiltunen.[1] The plaque shows Bergman shyly lowering the gaze, which is perhaps not a coincidence because he for a long time shunned public appearances.[1] As a result, Bergman's casting vote is decisive when the jury vote on the winner, and that he also writes the often very spiritual justification, while the CEO of the Swedish Film Institute presented the award at the ceremony.[1]
