The Dirty Picture is a 2011 Indian biographical drama film inspired by the life of Silk Smitha, an actress noted for her erotic roles. The film was directed by Milan Luthria and co-produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor.[1] Made on a budget of 18 crore (US$2.3 million), The Dirty Picture released worldwide on December 2, 2011 (the birth anniversary of Smitha)[2] in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions. Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi, Tusshar Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah played lead roles in the film.[3] Upon release, the film received both critical and commercial success, with Balan receiving maximum accolades for her performance and being called "the hero of the film". The film's music composed by Vishal Shekhar with lyrics by Rajat Aroraa were popular.

The film grossed 117 crore (US$15 million) worldwide and fetched several awards at popular award ceremonies, most of which were won by Vidya for her performance. The film bagged Balan her first National Film Award[4], a second Filmfare Award and a third consecutive Screen Award in the Best Actress category. The film went on to win three National Film Awards, three Filmfare Awards and six Screen Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. The other main achievements included those of costume designs, dialogues, make-up, playback singing and choreography.
