Rodrick Heffley
Rodrick is Greg's older brother. Rodrick's role in the books is often bullying Greg and playing in his band, Löded Diper, in which he plays as a drummer. Rodrick doesn't talk to his little brother Manny much, and is as lazy as Greg. He is fond of heavy metal. He also has a liking for shrunken heads. He enjoys causing trouble and blaming it on Greg, which almost always works. He tries to humiliate Greg several times. Throughout the series he is seen very old-school taking by "you hit me once, I hit you twice," the person being hit usually Greg. He is shown to not be very intelligent and spends most of his free time sleeping. In Rodrick Rules, Greg mentions that once the year before Rodrick slept for thirty-six full hours, missing an entire day of his life as well as school, and no one bothered to wake him up. Rodrick becomes a rock star and leaves for a band tour in Diary of a Wimpy Kid Dog Days. Rodrick gets away with everything that he's done to Greg because of Gregs worst secret which is very embarressing. If Greg says he won't do something to Rodrick, Rodrick says he will tell everyone his secret!

Main characters

Gregory Heffley

Greg is the main character in all the books. In the first book he's in Grade 6, Grade seven in the 2nd and third books, and the 4th one is about the summer vacation between grade 7 and 8. In the 5th book he will be in grade 8. He gets a diary every school year starting from 6th grade and writes in it. Greg likes video games and comics. He lies mostly to get out of problems and avoids Rodrick and older kids at his school from killing him . He was the cartoonist of the short-lived school newspaper comic, "Creighton the Cretin," a tree in the school production of The Wizard of Oz, a safety patrol guard, and a pirate for Halloween. All of Greg's adventures are recounted in the books. He's got a mom named Susan, a dad named Frank, an older brother named Rodrick, and a little brother named Manny.

Frank Heffley

Frank is Greg's father. Frank loves sports, reading and "building character". Frank hates video games, heavy metal, Rodrick's friends Bill and Ward, and teenagers in general. Frank likes doing outdoor projects and weight lifting and many other "manly things." He tries encouraging Rodrick, Greg, and Manny to do "manly things" with him. He is probably the one who named his youngest son Manny, since he always wants people to act like men with him. Frank also has extremely high cholesterol because he is a junk food addict. His favorite hobby is working on his American Civil War diorama, moving around the plastic soldiers to make it as accurate as possible, painting new guns, constructing the background or the battlefield, etc. His younger brother Joe calls them "toys." He keeps the diorama locked in a workroom in the basement and only ever let Greg see it once or twice when he showed him the "latest improvements". Frank also doesn't even allow Manny in the room (the only way to keep Manny out is that he has to say: "I think I just heard some grunting noise coming from the furnace room, Manny."). Frank, overall, is thoroughly disappointed by his children's hobbies and traits such as Greg's playing video games and Rodrick's loud music and band, Löded Diper.

Susan Heffley

Susan is Greg's mother. Susan is a middle class mom who is caring, but sometimes overcaring. Susan is a good mom and wife, but sometimes embarrasses her children (especially Greg) and husband, but she is nearly always cheery and accepting. She also likes to call Greg "Honeybunches", which usually embarrasses Greg. The fact that she never removes her glasses bears a resemblance to June Drabble, another cartoon character. Greg often shows evidence that Susan doesn't understand kids at Greg's age. Greg says she likes "just about every kind of music ever to exist" and dancing, even to Rodrick's heavy metal music. Susan once humiliated Rodrick when she started dancing onstage during his performance at the Talent Show, which was recorded and got on the Internet, known as the "Dancing Mom" video in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.

Manny Heffley

Manny is Greg's little brother who gets anything and everything he wants and makes Greg jealous. Manny makes Greg jealous because he has rights Greg didn't when he was Manny's age such as being allowed to bring toys to church. Manny does lots of things to annoy Greg but Frank and Susan never punish him no matter how much he deserves it. This happened when Manny drew a picture of himself on Greg's bedroom door in permanent marker. Greg thought Frank and Susan would be very mad, but he was wrong. Manny wasn't potty trained until October, so that when he had to start preschool then unlike his other classmates who started in September. Unfortunately, now he's afraid of them because they were having their Halloween party and everyone was wearing their costumes.

Rowley Jefferson

Greg's self-proclaimed best friend who usually helps with Greg with his schemes. Rowley is foolish and naive as he usually listens to Greg while he is concocting a scheme. He is an only child and, according to Greg, a "vain fool." Rowley gets a lot of attention from the girls in his grade only because he is "cute", according to Holly Hills. He was falsely accused of chasing kindergartners with a worm on a stick, which was actually Greg wearing his jacket. He then told the principal and Greg lost his duty on safety patrol. He did not forgive Greg, so they were not friends for a while, but much later they got over it. Rowley also had the short stint of being the cartoonist of the school newspaper comic, "Zoo-Wee Mama!" Rowley also received the honor for being class clown.

Other characters

Patty Farrell

Patty is a girl in Greg's grade who has a "nerd" look and always is a major tattletale to Greg. In the first book, Greg finds a way to cheat on his USA state capitals test, but Patty ruins it by telling the teacher to cover the USA map (which was Greg's bailout) and causes Greg to fail the test. She plays Dorothy in the school musical and apples get thrown at her by the trees (including Greg). In The Last Straw, when the teacher leaves the room, Patty is left in charge and when she is in charge, she lets no one out of the room, even when they have to use the lavatory.

Holly Elizabeth Hills

Holly Hills is a girl Greg has a crush on. She is the most popular girl in Greg's grade and as Greg says "is the fourth prettiest girl in my class but the top three all have boyfriends." Greg tried to get a good moment with her at the Valentine's Day dance, but Fregley ruined it because of a huge sugar rush after he ate a bunch of cupcakes from the freshments table. At the end of Book 3, Greg gave up on girls because she mistook him for Fregley.

Heather Hills

Heather Hills is Holly Hills's sister and she was once Rowley's babysitter until Rowley's parents switched her with Leland. According to Greg, Heather Hills is the prettiest girl at Crossland High School. Greg always tries to make it to Rowley's house before story time when Heather babysits. She has her picture in the yearbook next to Rodrick. Greg seemed to be disappointed when Rowley's parents replaced her with Leland. In the online version of the book, Heather was fired for smoking.

The Whirley Street kids

The Whirley Street kids are the kids on the "next neighborhood over", Whirley Street. Greg and Rowley are always trying to ambush or prank them, but they always get pranked instead. In the first book, Greg and Rowley make a huge snowball and plan to run down the Whirley Street kids with it, but Dad (Frank) destroys the snowball with a snow shovel after Greg ruins Manny's miniature snowman. Shortly after, the Whirley Street kids throw snowballs at Greg and Rowley. In The Last Straw, the Whirley Street kids take the bus to school instead of Greg and Rowley. The Whirley Street kids "make monkey noises" on the bus at Greg and Rowley, which bothers Greg because it's "what we always used to do to them when we passed by".

Chirag Gupta

Chirag Gupta is a minor character in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. He's presumably the shortest person in his class. In Rodrick Rules, Greg plays a joke on Chirag called the Invisible Chirag Joke, in which Chirag's classmates pretended that he was still gone. The joke lasted for a few days, until Chirag told his dad. In The Last Straw Greg plays another joke on April Fool's Day in which Greg and his friends spoke very quietly around Chirag to make him think that he was losing his hearing, but Chirag figured out what was going on pretty quick, and he went straight to the teacher to stop it before it became too big. Greg says that Chirag is small but he has a very powerful punch. Greg says if school was based on height not age kids like Chirag would still be in first grade.

Lenwood Heath

Lenwood Heath only appeared in The Last Straw. He has long hair. He is a teenager and is usually Frank Heffley's "arch-enemy". He said that he's trying to get good grades at Spag Union so he can get into West Point, and at that point, Greg knew that Frank might send him to Spag Union too, and he was going to do it until he rethought the whole thing.

Alex Aruda

Alex Aruda is one of the smartest people in Greg's school. He has glasses and a big afro. Greg usually copies off his math test when he's finished (because he puts his test on his side and doesn't know Greg can see it). In The Last Straw, Mrs. Craig's dictionary was missing and the class asked Alex to crack the case. According to Greg, "we told Alex we needed him to solve the mystery of who took Mrs. Craig's dictionary. But he didn't even know what we were talking about! I guess he had been so wrapped up in that book that he hadn't noticed what was going on around him." Alex Aruda charged Greg and his friends five dollars for the case only to reveal that he had the dictionary to practice spelling (as Greg put it "well that would've been nice to know before we gave him our $5.00"). It was then grabbed by Corey Lamb, who was interrogated for taking it and returned it to Mrs. Craig's desk but got caught and was punished.

Fregley

Fregley is a repulsive and widely disrespected student at Greg's school. He usually hangs out in his front yard doing various strange things like stabbing a kite with a stick or trying to talk to Greg about strange topics like, 'Does this scab smell funny to you?'. He apparently goes crazy after having sugar evidently in Diary of a Wimpy Kid when he chases Greg after stealing his jelly beans. He has a made-up language which is only shown in the first book when he shouts, "Juice, Juice!" when he needed to use the restroom. He plays a role in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw when Holly Hills mistakes Greg for Fregley which makes Greg give up on girls.

Trista

Trista is a girl that moved to Greg's neighborhood in the final sections of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw. Not much is known about her except that Greg seems to have a crush on her based on the final few pages in the book. It's possible that Trista likes Greg too, because we see her say hi to him very friendly. As for Rowley, not so much. She will appear again in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days.

Bill Walter

Rodrick's friend and Löded Diper's lead guitarist, Bill still lives with his parents and lacks a job, even though he's thirty-five years old. Frank "is worried that Rodrick will see Bill as some kind of a role model and follow in his footsteps one day". When he attended Rodrick's school, he was voted 'most likely to be a rock star' along with a meek-looking, seemingly nerdy little girl named Anna Wrentham (whom Greg believes is in jail).

The Snellas

The Snellas are a family that lives in the Heffleys' neighborhood, and they have a lot of children, all of whom are male and have names beginning with the letter S. All we know are five of the children's names (here's the order from oldest to youngest): Sam, Scott, Shawn, Shane, and Seth. In book one, Shane Snella makes an appearance in Greg and Rowley's haunted house, getting stuck underneath an old bed they call "The Hall of Screams" and coming out crying. In book two, Greg discouraged Shawn Snella's dream for becoming a basketball player because of his height and weight by saying "Think again, Shawn, not one of your parents is taller than five-foot-two, and you're the only two hundred pound six-year-old I know". Then Shawn burst into tears, and his dad came to get him. In book three, it is revealed that each Snella child has a half birthday party in which the adults have to perform funny stunts. Mr. Snella then sends the videos to "America's Funniest Families", a spoof of America's Funniest Home Videos, and has never won anything.

Ward

Ward is one of Rodrick's friends who only showed up in the second book. His appearances are sprinkled throughout the book. One appearance he makes is when he and Rodrick put fake vomit on people's cars at the Home Depot parking lot. Ward was also the first guy to show up at Rodrick's party. In the "Winter Talent Show", Ward stood in front of the stage wearing a shirt that said "SECURITY".

Scotty Douglas

Scotty is a first grader from Rowley's karate class. He and Rowley were going to do a magic act in the Talent Show, but after Greg broke Rowley's arm, he had to fill in for Rowley. Greg complained about being a magician's assistant to Scotty, but Susan said he'd love to do it.

Leland

Leland lives next door to Rowley, and he is his babysitter. Leland taught Greg and Rowley how to play "Magick and Monsters", which is a game based on several real-life games. Rodrick later told Greg that Leland's the "biggest nerd is his school." In the "Winter Talent Show," Leland did a ventriloquist act and won the grand prize. He will reapear in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days.

Bryce Anderson

Bryce Anderson is the most popular boy in Greg's grade. Back in elementary school he claimed his dislike of females by saying "Girls are stinky poos!". In which Greg disagreed with him by saying "I don't think girls are stinky poos!" but still didn't get any credit. He is seen talking to Holly Hills when Greg was trying out his ventriloquist kit.

Fregley's mother

When Greg came over to Fregley's house to have a sleepover in order to prove to Rowley he had other friends, Fregley's mother came up and said she was happy to see Fregley with a "playmate" which was a turm Greg was not too enthusiastic about.

Chirag Gupta's father

Mr. Gupta was seen when Susan made Greg go over to Chirag's house and apologize for the cruel joke he played on his son. Unlike Chirag, Mr. Gupta was not impressed with his apology.

Relatives of Greg Heffley

Uncle Charlie

Greg's uncle, Charlie is described by Greg as being able to get him anything he wants for Christmas or his birthday. Ironically, the few times throughout the series that Uncle Charlie brought Greg gifts, he is only disappointed by what he brings.

Grandma Heffley

Greg's grandmother seems to favor Manny the best, since she has photographs of him all around the house though she continuously says "I love all my grandchildren the same". One time when Greg was six, Grandma wouldn't let him have ice cream before dinner, so he wrote her a note saying "I hate you, Gramma" which Grandma placed on the wall and held over Greg's head ever since. Greg still spells Grandma "Gramma" today.

Grandpa Heffley

Greg's grandfather only appeared in Rodrick Rules in which he was revealed to be living in Leisure Towers, an old folks home. He has a TV, but he always has it tuned over to the retirement home's security camera in the main lobby. He makes a meal he calls "watercress salad" which consists of cucumbers and cold green beans in vinegar which Greg thinks is gross. He always plays a game with his grandsons called "Gutbusters" where one player reads old jokes and comparative metaphors from a card, and whoever goes the longest without laughing wins, and Greg always beats Grandpa, and Rodrick always loses that game on purpose when it's Greg's turn so he can spit out a whole mouthful of milk when he laughs. According to him, Greg is his favorite grandson.

Uncle Joe

Frank's younger brother, Uncle Joe has a sibling rivalry with him. When Manny started potty training, Uncle Joe insisted that there was a "potty monster" about to get him, causing Manny to fear using the bathroom for a couple years, so that meant Frank had to change his diapers for a longer time. Also, Uncle Joe's children call Dad (Frank) "Aunt Fwank [Frank]", which Frank thinks he told them to do on purpose, but Susan thinks it's cute.

Aunt Loretta

Greg's aunt, Loretta is the woman he writes a thank you card to for buying him pants for Christmas in book 1. In book 2 Aunt Loretta appears at the Heffley's Thanksgiving get-together.

Aunt Lydia

Aunt Lydia is Greg's aunt who he once had to write a thank you card for getting him an encyclopedia for Christmas in Book 1. She is never seen and is only mentioned that one time. Although, it is possible she was the woman who bought Susan the sign that said "Bless This House" for Christmas.

Relatives of Rowley

Rowley's father

Mr. Jefferson is a lot more shrill than Mr. Heffley. He won't let Greg or Rowley play any violent video games, and in Book 1 and didn't believe them about their haunted house. In Book 2 Mr. Jefferson didn't look too happy when Greg told Rowley's grandfather that he could have a chocolate cake at his birthday party the next year if he was alive by then. Mr. Jefferson was not pleased when Greg told Rowley that Mr. Jefferson smelled like a woman in a secret language (the secret is you say Pa after every word) at Rowley's sleepover during dinner. Mr. Jefferson ended up sending Greg home before desert.

Rowley's mother

Mrs. Jefferson seems to often be concerned about Rowley such as when he broke his big toe after Greg put one of Frank's dumbells under a pillow that Rowley kept kicking at Greg's sleepover. She also had Greg apologize to her for what he did to her son.

Rowley's grandfather

Rowley's grandfather is only shown once in Book 2 when he was having his birthday party. He said he wanted a chocolate cake next year in which Greg replied that he could have one if he were alive by then which angered Mr. Jefferson.
