Marathwada Mukti Sangram Din (Marathwada Liberation Day) is the day celebrated in Maharashtra state of India on 17 September annually to mark the day when Marathwada region became part of India on 17 September 1948, ending the rule of Nizam of Hyderabad as a effect of Operation Polo conducted by Government of India supported by local rebels.[1][2][3][4]

History

India got independence from British on 15 August 1947. After Partition of India various princely states were having option to join either India or Pakistan. Muslim ruler of Hindu majority princely Hyderabad State, Osman Ali Khan, decided to remain independent. He also appealed in United Nations for granting separate statehood for his pricenly state which included current Marathwada and Telangana region. This sparked rebel in Hyderabad State. Marathwada saw some major revolts under leadership of Swami Ramanand Tirth, Govindbhai Shroff, Vajayantra Kabra, P H Patwardhan and others, against the Razakars of Nizam. After failure of all diplomatic efforts of the Government of India, a brief police action was taken named Operation Polo which ultimately ended rule of Nizam in Hyderabad state and on 17 September 1948 Marathwada region and Telangana region became part of India.[5][3][6][7]

Celebrations

Marathwada Liberation Day is a general holiday in Maharashtra. It is celebrated by hoisting Indian National Flag on all government buildings in all cities and villages of Marathwada region. People gather around "Marathwada Liberation Day Monument" to give tribute to martyrs of the liberation struggle. Schools usually holds rallies of student. Various seminars arranged to discuss social issues related to economically backward region of Marathwada.[7][6]. Kallamb town in District Osmanabad celebrates this day by giving tribute to freedom fighter Shri Ganpatrao Kathale.
