Old Forge is a hamlet on New York State Route 28 in the town of Webb in Herkimer County, New York. Old Forge was formerly a village that dissolved its incorporation, but it is still the principal community in the region. Old Forge forms an extensive business district, primarily directed at tourism especially during the summer months. The local school is the Town of Webb UFSD, a K-12 institution with the Eskimo as their mascot.
The Enchanted Forest Water Safari is a major attraction in Old Forge. It is also home to one of the oldest operating summer camps in the United States, Adirondack Woodcraft Camps, which is owned and operated by the Leach family. Old Forge is the starting point for the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, as well as the Adirondack Canoe Classic, a three-day, 90-mile canoe race.
The Adirondack Scenic Railroad is a scenic railway that runs from Utica to Old Forge (and from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake. The train station is located in Thendara, a hamlet just to the West Old Forge and bordering it.
Old Forge was the first place in the United States to use a mail boat to deliver mail to houses on the lake. [1] The boat is still run today and is one of only a few dozen mailboats still operating in the United States.
Old Forge often records the lowest winter temperatures in New York. On February 17, 1979, the record low temperature for New York was set in Old Forge at -52 degrees Fahrenheit.[2][3]
The town is home to Adirondack Woodcraft Camp, located off of Rondaxe Road. It was founded in 1925 as an outdoor camp for boys by Chief William Abbott. The now coed camp still welcomes children each summer and is one of the oldest summer camps remaining in the nation.[4]
