Ring of Fire is a jukebox musical based on the music of Johnny Cash.
It opened on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on March 12, 2006. Due to poor reviews and critical reception, as well as low ticket sales, the final performances were in April 2006, only one month after opening.
During the shows test runs in the fall of 2005 the new musical was a sensation. "Ring of Fire" was not meant to play Broadway. Once it started showing in studio theatres and performing halls, fans just could not get enough.
“white- hot, string-poppin fiddle playing with rock-the-house percussion and more guitars than you can count” - Naples News.
“ A fabulous piece of entertainment. A musical of grandeur and perfected style that offers endless delight. See it.” - The Buffalo News.
“ Fire burns brighter, truer and more imaginative than most” - USA Today.
“Touching and Exuberant. It will touch your toes tapping.” - Associated Press.
Through words and music, "Ring of Fire" brings to life as well as honouring a remarkable musical legend - Johnny Cash. Full of love and emotion, humour and empathy, Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash pays tribute to the legendary man in black with, dance, comedy, stories, tragedy and love.
"It's not a concert at all," Tony Award-winning director Maltby (Ain't Misbehavin', Fosse) told Playbill.com. "[Producer] Jim Freydberg wants the tag to be 'ask anyone who's seen it,' because in a way, you can't describe what it is. It's a book musical without a book — a play made up of songs."
