How small?

I recently saw someone change Munkholmen from an island to an islet.

Munkholmen is 13.000 square meters according to the Norwegian Wikipedia; it's about 150 metres across. Should that be considered a big islet or a smal island? --Alvestrand 08:06, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Dictionary?

Why does this article exist? All it says is that an islet is a small island which is a dictionary entry not an encyclopedia article. Abtract 00:21, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

List of islets

As you can see, I have begun a list of islets. Very time intensive. I got the references just by typing Islet in the WP search box. Worth the effort? Keep or toss? Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 07:43, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

A complete list of islets is not worth the effort. There are more than 8 000 islands and islets (some mentioned the figure 50 000) in the Archipelago Sea of Finland alone. Most of those are islets. You do not want a list with even the islets a Jurmo inhabitant was supposed to know (before the time of cheap and good maps and charts).

You could try to create a category for islets that have an article of their own, or articles which describe several islets. An alternative is to put a couple of interesting ones, typical in different ways, in the list and shortly describe why they are interesting.

If you want to find islets outside the English dominated areas you probably have to search in other ways. Islets with lighthouses may be easy to find, and some will have names with some synonym of islet in their name.

Definition of Types

I renamed the section and rep'd this rambling sentence:

As with many of these terms, the actual size limits of islets are subjective, and vary.

If there are regional variations or occupational variations, give some examples. To say "subjective" conveys no information. We could use some examples of particularly small named islets, and descriptions of relatively large things that have been verifiably been called "an islet" without geographers calling the usage "surprising" or "bizarre".
BTW, the top of that image is always above, but if the reader's window is narrow enuf (or the lead secn grows), there's nothing to the right.

Likewise, any emergent land on an atoll (a type of island) is also called an islet.

("On an atoll? Would you call almost touching it "on" it? Isn't any land actually touching an atoll part of the atoll? Actually, i think atolls usually have multiple islands. Does this just imply being on the rim of the same former volcano, and bordering the same lagoon?)
