May I Have Your Attention, Please[edit]

Please, may I have your attention. Basically just rewrote all of the parts that sounded like they were written by a high school journalism student- which, I suppose they were. Being 4 in the morning I'm not sure how much better I did. Also, I mentioned some things without citation, and marked them as such. I'm not sure how to cite things like the original agreement, and being so long ago I can't even be sure they are entirely true. I vaguely recall reading something about it in the west hallway between the gym and the science wing, but I hear they've done tore that up good since I left. Maybe some current student types could solve that one. High school brigade, go? Akedrou (talk) 11:13, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Schools Assessment[edit]

Main priority is gathering references to defend claims. Alumni list would be useful. Photo gallery? Victuallers 18:05, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Three gyms???[edit]

Yes: - The main gym - The one upstairs (above the guys lockers) - The new gym

I've only seen the outside of the new additions, buthave been told it is a gym. Also, The one upstairs is where the badminton class was held in years past, and the closet has a bunch of ping-pong tables that sometimes are pulled out during that class. BabuBhatt 02:57, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, the new addition isn't anything special.

Necessity[edit]

Unfortunately, the school needs and uses all three gyms, plus the free-weight rooms and pool, almost every period of every day. While it would be nice to see the money go somewhere else, Arapahoe is a balanced-enough school to allow this kind of spending. The interior of the new addition is very functional and serves Arapahoe well.

Matt Stone[edit]

I believe Ms. Black taught him, if at least for a short while. Can we ask her or something? Jake34567 03:32, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree, unless she taught him at Heritage:
BabuBhatt 22:04, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mrs. Blechschmidt (she remarried) did indeed teach Matt Stone at Heritage High School. -Class of 2006 alum

Article name[edit]

Is it really necessary to tag on the "(Centennial, Colorado)" onto the article's name? When I went to the page Arapahoe High School, it was a redirection to this article. This indicates that in terms of Wikipedia, there are no other schools called Arapahoe High School. I propose a move to Arapahoe High School. — Webdinger BLAH | SZ 01:16, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are in fact at least two, the other one being in Nebraska. Chris 06:46, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Marching Band[edit]

Avoiding the ancient "is marching band a sport": Regardless of that, it is athletic, and as fitting in the category as might be dance. It seems not notable enough to warrant its very own "Marching Band" section, so unless someone wants to put together a section on the various performing arts sections of the school and then move marching band there - which I am not opposed to - just let it be. Four Years?[edit]

Its been a while since I graduated from AHS, but when did they go from a 3 year school (10-12) to a 4 year school (9-12)? —Preceding unsigned comment added by RapidEye (talkcontribs) 17:41, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please be more specific to what you're talking about, as anyone can edit wikipedia. You don't appear to have ever edited this article, so it's difficult to comment. Dayewalker (talk) 03:11, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Location[edit]

Google Maps shows Arapahoe as being in an unincorporated area but the City of Centennial shows it as being in the city limits, zoned as I-1

Shooting[edit]

Some debate here about additions to the shooting section. There was previously an article, but it was deleted. I personally feel that the reason some people voted for it to be merged (which consisted mostly of just deleting the article, which had itself been based on the section about the shooting on this article) could have been that the sheriff's office avoided naming the shooter; just as naming him gives him "publicity", so would a separate article.

The editor at that link expressed concern about undue weight given to the shooting. Obviously, if it's a problem the separate article could be re-created. This is commonly done when a section grows too large. Some things I decided not to mention: the father of the female student who was killed saying at her funeral, "the shooter... has a name. His name was Karl Pierson"; an organization related to horse riding doing something to honour the female student who was killed; the security officer who criticized the school administration and maybe stopped working in some capacity as a result of that; when he purchased the weapon, and the bullets used in the attack (I think the date he purchased he bullets was announced); the fact that his mum kept him out of school for three days, despite that some people thought he had been suspended; the fact that the date of the shooting was one day before the anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting, and his diary indicated that he anticipated he might be dead, which implies that this date was not a coincidence and was in some way planned; what other students thought about Karl Pierson, or stuff like the topics or methods used in his speeches or debates (one of them mentioned a particular body part); his professed like of communism, including things like wearing T-shirts that were related to communism. Mentioning these on the article for Arapohoe High would, indeed, be undue weight.

(As a note, the execution of a Korean official should not be seen as related due to Karl Pierson's diary indicating that he expected something that would lead to his death before news of the execution of the Korean official became public.)

While I am discussing it though, there are parts of the linked comment that are problematic: "There is much much more to this school that something that occured in 10 minutes on one day." This description of the shooting does not give it proper importance. I note that the user who made this comment also reverted a previous addition to the article about the renovations made to the library. 2601:8:9780:1EE:F851:E413:9459:41D4 (talk) 10:44, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not adding it to the article, but two former security guards said that warning signs were ignored: [1] 2601:8:9780:1EE:F851:E413:9459:41D4 (talk) 11:07, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Talking about this in the article might be undue weight or just speculation, but the significance of "alea iacta est": his approach to the school was caught on surveillance video; most high schools in the US probably have some type of video surveillance. Not sure if poor schools are more or less likely. Once he brought a weapon onto school grounds, it was very likely that either he would die or face criminal charges unless something else unusual occurred that caused people to decide not to charge him. In his diary he said he would soon be dead; so the actual outcome, of him dying, cannot be seen as unusual or unexpected. Humans do not typically associate high-probability events with risk or chance; most people don't qualify "see you tomorrow" with "unless you get run over by a bus". Dice are used in games of chance. If Karl Pierson had killed a few more people, people would likely have treated the event roughly the same way; furthermore, it would have been easy for him to kill more people if he hadn't shot himself, and the room numbers he wrote on his arm suggested he may have thought about how he could have killed more people. It does not, then, appear that "killing more people" was an outcome he thought would have been significant, and thus unlikely that "alea iacta est" referred to this possibility. The most easily anticipated outcomes to a school shooting, therefore, seem unrelated to this phrase. 2601:8:9780:1EE:F851:E413:9459:41D4 (talk) 11:27, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Another thing that would go in a separate article, but not appropriate for a section of this one: Karl Pierson wrote in his diary, "When I do commit my atrocities, I want the conversation to be about elementary school teasing. Words hurt, can mold a sociopath, and will lead someone a decade later to kill." Adam Lanza, known for the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, was said to have been bullied by other students in school, eventually leading to his mother taking him out of classes. It was reported that sometimes when he was younger, his mum would accompany him to class to ensure that no bullying occurred. this article speculates that this was his motive; there is, however, no proof that this shooting was related to the Sandy Hook shooting a year earlier. 2601:8:9780:1EE:F851:E413:9459:41D4 (talk) 11:45, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You have made no valid arguments from a logic standpoint, never mind that you have no sources to back you up or any policy to support your edits. I am guessing you must be a part of the school community? Please try to get some perspective on this. School shootings, while not exactly a dime a dozen, are not exactly rare either. Or new. I blew off my 40th class reunion in 2014 and I can recall approx. one in school shooting a month in metro Chicago where I grew up. Not new, not rare. You dismissed my WP:WEIGHT argument out of hand, seemingly implying I am part of the conspiracy theory you are espousing. It is however quite on point. The section on the shooting is by quite a bit the largest section in the article. Has nothing else ever happened here? The following things are absolutely unimportant unless you are part of the local community. And we do not write these articles for the local community:
  1. The name of the shooter, the victim or any other players in this event. Please explain how knowing names furthers Betty from Bhopal's understanding of this school.
  2. The exact sequence of events. Other than those that were there, who cares? There is no criminal case forthcoming from this, and if there are civil suits, those can be dealt with in summary when we have reliable, secondary, independent sources that discuss their outcomes. The fact that someone filed a suit is irrelevant. The fact that some bit players got settlements for their slap suits is irrelevant. If a suit is settled and the decision is sealed, you guessed it...irrelevant.
In short, this event is over and has been for quite a while. At this point, I am going to edit the information down to what is important: The date, the number of victim, and the fact that the shooter offed himself. If you can make a case why anything else is important to Betty from Bhopal, please do so. If it is important to Dave from Denver, it need not be here. Someone posted a fork template regarding the school shootings[edit]

Someone posted a "fork" template regarding the shooting that occurred at this school, but have made no arguments to support it. This would be the place to do that, or to oppose it.

  • Oppose - No substantial new information has been uncovered regarding the shooting since the prior deletion discussion closed in December 2013. There have been a few local articles, but nothing to show anything along the lines of what is required to have a freestanding article on a crime. There is no indication anywhere that any wide spread societal change has occurred due to this event; there is no evidence of extended widespread coverage of the event. It simply is not important to anyone but the population of the affected community whether there were some errors in the initial account. It is not important to anyone that a couple low level employees of the school district got a payday over it. And as far as the conspiracy theories being touted above, show me a reliable source that says what you are espousing. John from Idegon (talk) 02:43, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
