Better title

Car maintenance → Automobile maintenance — The title of this article, car maintenance, seems unnecessarily restictive. Wouldn't the title automotive maintenance or automobile maintenance still be acceptable, but not unnecessarily limit the article to cars? 70.247.164.231 (talk) 23:07, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

• As far as I know "car" is simply the British English word for American "automobile", but perhaps there is also a more restricted meaning for "car" in American? Either way I think it's a just a language difficulty and automobile maintenance would just be the same problem in reverse. However, both terms do omit many other vehicles which are within the scope of the article: vans, lorries (trucks) and so on. In that case, automotive maintenance seems a big improvement: it includes those other vehicles so describes the scope of the article better, and it avoids language difficulties as it is clearly comprehensible in UK English, and presumably also in American. • In American usage, car is usually distinguished from truck, for example. I agree automotive maintenance is preferable to automobile maintenance. Actually, auto maintenance also sounds better than automotive maintenance, but I'm not sure that's clear enough. I disagree that "auto" sounds old-fashioned to Americans, though.   • Depends on the context. Would you really expect someone to say "She'd taken the new auto out for a test drive"? Powers ^T 13:01, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
    • Exactly, it depends on context. "Auto maintenance" is generally understood to apply to most vehicles in the U.S., and this is the typical context in which "auto" is used, as a catch-all for various kinds of vehicles. "Car maintenance" would be understood as more limited in scope, just like motorcycle maintenance would be. The sentence you provide is a completely different context, unrelated to the issue under discussion, so I won't debate it further. 70.250.198.35 (talk) 03:28, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Repair shops

This article doesn't present a very broad view of auto maintenance. It reads more like a DIY checklist, and completely ignores the significant role of automobile repair shops. Think it needs to include this perspective to be complete and unbiased. 70.250.190.30 (talk) 01:10, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Merge

The two articles service (motor vehicle) and auto maintenance are currently very short and have so much overlap that a merger seems in order. Admittedly, "service" and "maintenance" are not perfect synonyms, in that you can do your own maintenance continually, whereas a service is done intermittently by a professional. However, that is a point that can easily be made in a merged article, without needing to repeat all the other things currently listed in both articles. jnestorius^(talk) 16:27, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Generally service means attending to simple/non critical thing like checking the oil level, refilling the window washing fluid, etc. Maintenance refers to things done to keep a functioning vehicle from malfunctioning, things like changing the oil, changing the brake linings, changing the timing belt, etc. Repairs are when you fix something that is broken. All three of these things are interrelated and overlapping.

Auto service should be about the most basic things like checking fluid levels, tire wear and belt and hose condition, maintenance should be about the concept of keeping a vehicle in good working order with the aim of making it run better and last longer.
