Casualties[edit]

I was directed to this page by Suggest bot. The Union casualties in the article say 3,500, yet the one in the table says 2,747. Which one is correct? Buggie111 (talk) 00:20, 6 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Uncited material[edit]

Currently, this article consists mainly of uncited material. Surprisingly, the casualty figures are also uncited, so it's impossible to know where they came from. I propose to greatly expand and update this article. I plan to incorporate the cited material and the nice pictures into the new text, but any uncited text may not be saved. Suggestions following assessment[edit]

(a) The Commanders section could be expanded (if they deserve a photo, they probably deserve inclusion eg Hood etc) (b) I found the detail on the armies hard to follow - too many numbers, not really clear how they relate to each other. (c) It would be helpful to understand where Reynolds' division actually was ie how far away is Dug Gap? Robinvp11 (talk) 19:43, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Robinvp11: Thanks for the review. (a) I assume you mean the commanders section of the infobox. Yes, I could probably add the 3 USA army commanders and the 3 CSA corps commanders, but USA corps and CSA division commanders would be too much. There is a CSA order of battle article, but the USA order of battle is incomplete. (b) The USA numbers are fairly accurate, but the CSA numbers will probably forever be a mystery since their army's record keeping was more informal. (However, Castel gives Thomas' army as 73,000 and I believe that's a typo for 63,000.) So, I cite different sources (Battles & Leaders, Cox, Castel) which may lead to confusion. (c) There is a map in which Dug Gap is shown, and it has a scale. If the sources don't mention the distance marched, then I can't really include that. The Reynolds sentence has a citation that does not include a page number and I have no way to get that data. Reynolds' Arkansas brigade was part of Cantey's division, but Cox places it at Dug Gap. - I noticed the clarification tag you added ("How far away is that?"). As I mentioned above, if the sources don't give the distance, then I cannot simply add that information. We are talking about 1864-era dirt roads that may or may not be the same as modern highways, so Google Maps cannot be used to calculate distance. Unless I am misunderstanding the question, it is asking for a level of detail that the sources do not provide. Djmaschek (talk) 22:35, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  - If you think that the topographic/core study map was helpful, then I'm OK with moving it up. But I put back the Cox battle map that was removed. I think it's helpful to know where the battle lines were located, which is something that the topo/core map does not provide. My rationale for picture placement is to put them where they do not interfere with section headers. Djmaschek (talk) 22:51, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    - I just removed the clarification needed tag for the reason stated in one of the bullet points above. One historian places Reynolds' brigade at Resaca, while another says it was at Dug Gap. Both statements are included. Inserting a tag asking for the distance between the two places appears to be asking for research. Djmaschek (talk) 03:48, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
