PDC the largest party in Chile?[edit]

The Wikipedia entry for the UDI or Independent Democrat Party states that it is the largest party in Chile, which sounds like a very dubious claim to me... But aside from trying to check that statement against facts right now, I changed the referece to the "fairly recent democratic Chile", as it gives the wrong impression: Chile returned to democracy over 16 years ago, and before Pinochet (1973) it enjoyed a long, solid democratic tradition...

Actually, the "long, solid democratic tradition" most foreigners talk about is not 100% true. Carlos Ibáñez's dictatorship ended in 1931, but there was series of coups and counter-coups in 1932. From then on, Chilean democracy managed to install itself pretty definitely, but there were numerous plots to depose the government, perhaps most notably the failed Nazi putsch of 1938. When Frei's presidency ended, radical leftist and rightist terrorists and guerrilla groups further debilitated democracy. Allende himself did nothing to stop the leftist groups and allegedly he himself planned to lead a coup to install a "dictatorship of the proletariat". And yes, the UDI is the largest party in Chile, just check the Chilean Library of Congress website or the websites of either chamber.Marmaduque 22:29, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PDC is a christian democratic party with a centre-left position. Can you correct the box? please. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.15.182.130 (talk) 14:32, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The ideology of PDC is and was Christian democracy. Its positions have changed in the course of history, basically from more left-wing to centre-right positions. Nowadays it is much closer to the so-called “neo-liberalism” than to centre-left/soc dem policies.--Pan Miacek and his crime-fighting dog (woof!) 16:50, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Really? I read PDC wants a Social market economy and not a neoliberalism system.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.15.14.86 (talkcontribs)

PDC is a centrist party. Cf. Britannica [1]Pan Miacek and his crime-fighting dog (woof!) 14:14, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
