Definition in UK[edit]

This definition is not quite correct for the UK. There is a perceived difference here between 'Community gardens' (run by non-profit organisations, who may or may not allocate plots to individuals, but who usually undertake a great deal of planting and maintenance themselves) and 'allotments' (or 'allotment gardening') as the article says - these are plots usually allocated to individuals by local authorities, who do not themselves undertake planting and maintenance - the 'allotment gardening' article makes this clear.

Fuzzily put, too, UK community gardens are generally in built-up areas and often fulfill roles as park space and play areas. Allotments are more usually on the edge of town and are not generally regarded as public open space. This distinction is not hard and fast, however.

Yes, I know I can edit it, but will try for a genuinely clear definition of Community Gardens in a UK context, so will do this later. Tarquin Binary 08:54, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and just to add an annoying extra, we also have something called a 'city park' in the UK, this being purely intended as collectively or cooperatively run open space (though it may be indirectly financed by local government). It gets muddy because an area can be defined as being both a community garden and a city park - it will be the latter, even if it allows planting by members, if there is unrestricted access for the general public...

OK, I've added a section clarifying the status of this term in the UK. I've left the earlier section, inasmuch as it applies to the rest of the world, intact, except for removing UK from the 'allotment gardening' link-up.

gardenmaster[edit]

Removed the link to gardenmaster's user page, as this is being deplored elsewhere. For the record, original entry was from gardenmaster 03:22, 2 Feb 2004 (UTC)

List of...[edit]

Rather than secions for every city in the main article, I think we have enough to start a "List of..." article. Thoughts? Rklawton 14:47, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agree It seems that there are more and more gardens being added and a seperate list makes more sense to me. This will ensure that the article retains focus on Community Gardens per se.HelloMojo 10:27, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agree Hey Guys. I'm interested in helping to clean this up. There is also a page started at Community_gardening. I think it makes sense to start at the top of the article with the general and move down to more specific. Also, some of this doesn't seem to be NPOV...we may want to watch the tone and wordings.--Ryandwayne 20:30, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, made a move[edit]

There were two pages being created...Community Garden and Community Gardening. Since they were basically the same content/scope I decided to make a merge without consensus, assuming this wasn't controversial. --Ryandwayne 20:51, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
