References[edit]

Hello - I have just added references to a page titled Dow Brain. Is there anyone out there who can tell me if these references are sufficient, so that this page is not deleted? Thank you.

[the text above was by [[User:Estherruth0219] - add ~~~~ to the end of a Talk Page post to sign it.]]. Thanks for trying Wikipedia. There is a range of opinion on these things - to me, the references seem like enough already, but I'm what is called an "inclusionist" and I know some other people who would disagree. It is possible someone will take this to "AfD" (articles for deletion) for a discussion about it. My feeling is that someone with several films in IMDb definitely deserves an article, and if needed more references should turn up. Wnt (talk) 16:17, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but I strongly disagree with Wnt, and I'm afraid policy does too. IMDb, Discogs and Wikipedia itself are all community-generated sites; our guideline on reliable sources specifically negates the use of such sites as sources (IMDb and wikis are actually referenced as examples). That leaves Allmusic.com, which is a totally adequate source for verifying information, and as such is useful. However, it doesn't do anything to help the article pass the notability requirements, which govern what can and can't have an article on Wikipedia - a list of credits is not the "significant, in-depth" coverage required. If it went to AfD in its present state, it would be deleted.
I'm neither an inclusionist nor a deletionist, and it seems possible - even probable - that an artist with this level of output should have enough coverage to warrant a pass of the notability criteria. I'm therefore going to hold off on proposing deletion, at least until after the weekend, to allow time to search for appropriate sources. If there's nothing better by Monday, I'll run it up the flagpole at AfD and see what the community reckon. Yunshui  23:29, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What we want are sources like this, this this, this and this (nudge nudge, wink wink).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:32, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, that'd do the trick :) I'll have a go at introducing some of that material into the article. Yunshui  08:47, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hey presto! WP:GNG now has the Boston Globe and Boston Herald, as well as a book from a major reference publisher, to keep it happy. Nice work, Fuhghettaboutit.
(I've left out the Billboard sources, since one's a passing mention and the other doesn't seem to mention Dow Brain - they still meet WP:V, though, so more could be added.) Yunshui  09:01, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, i've just taken a look at the article and added an infobox (which shall need to be filled with the right information), persondata, wikilinks, and put the references into the available {{cite}}, {{allmusic}}, {{discogs}} and {{imdb}} templates. I'm also tagging it as a stub and adding project banners. If you are adding more information to the article however i would advise it be broken into sections. Keep up the good work :) Cheers, benzband (talk) 09:23, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
