Proposed merger[edit]

I strongly disagree, it is normal for flags to have their own page, this has enough data to stand on its own and hence should be kept for expansion. Merging with symbols would add nothing.- J Logan t: 19:58, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have no strong feelings, I just noticed that the content of this article combined would make a reasonable sub-section. Brussels has four different symbols, none of which have a great deal of background information. I'm frustrated there's virtually no information on the internet about the coat of arms. But if you want this as a separate article, I won't challenge that. - SSJ  02:53, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind, this is the best solution. - SSJ  11:22, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Blue[edit]

Anyone know where that comes from. Whenever anyone talks about it, they always say the origin of the Iris but not why the background is blue. I'd be tempted to say it is a link to the EU, but blue is quite common. However blue is not in the Belgian flag, they city of Brussels flag and isn't that prominent in the flags of the other municipalities (look through them for a lesson on how to be boring, ambiguous and incredibly unoriginal; they seem to copy each other... is this like vlexifasion? Blue and white bicolour is so in this year!). It also isn't in the Flemish or Wallon flags, Brussels isn't know for water or sailing, and it generally isn't a colour you think of for the city. Could just be because it looks nice of course...- J.Logan`t: 17:43, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously, the colours derive from the European flag. Can't be anything else. Yes we just need a source.
The "emblem" is obscure for me. What's the point? - The flag and the emblem; are they officially two separate things? Or has the emblem just a different ratio? - SSJ  20:57, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The emblem does not have the blue background, it is just the iris which is placed upon the blue background of the flag. Its like a coat of arms on a flag (i.e. Slovakia or Kosovo).
And I do not think it is wise to say it is "obvious". I could just be because they thought the blue just went well against the yellow...- J.Logan`t: 21:32, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I'd never write in an article that something is "obvious". I'm just saying here on the talk page that considering it was adopted in 1992, Brussels wanted to be percieved as the EU's capital, and the EU flag was adopted in 1986 - there's an elephant in the room. - SSJ  21:42, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't mean in the article, I was meaning generally. There is no guarantee at all, especially as it has gone unsaid - if it was a direct reference, they probably would mention it - or even had included a more explicit mention. I am trying to find someone to email but don't know who would be an authority on this.- J.Logan`t: 21:58, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just said what I'm thinking, I know there's no guarantee. - ¨SSJ  00:46, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
