Like many of the statements in this article, the timeframe is rather vague, and somewhat misleading.

At face value, the above statement is false. It contains a series of statements that may have been true at different periods of time, but are neither simultaneously nor sequesntially true. It needs considerable clarification.

1) Fraternal societies grew alongside Savings & Loan institutions in the US - What does this mean?

Fraternal societies around the world grew alongside Savings & Loan institutions in the US? - false

Fraternal societies in the US grew alongside Savings & Loan institutions in the US? - I don't know. Hence

2) Fraternal societies grew alongside Savings & Loan institutions in the US, like friendly societies and building societies in the UK - What does this mean? The sentence confuses me - I can't make any sense of it.

Fraternal societies in the US grew alongside Savings & Loan institutions in the US, in a manner similar to the way friendly societies in the UK grew alongside and building societies in the UK - I doubt it.

3) as the forerunners of modern financial services.

Remarkably false!!

The friendly & fraternal societies were (and still are) focused on member social services and member welfare. (Bury the dead, care for the sick, raise the orphans, etc.) In the 19th century, they were the only such organisations filling this role, and became very strong. (e.g. the Oddfellows had over a million members.) One of the many ways they did this was to provide various "insurance" services covering situations like sickness, unemployment, death, funerals, education, etc.

Note: NOT houses, cars, fire, theft, and other general insurance.

Note: NOT banking and investment.

In the 20th century, various governments started to provide these services, thus leaving the societies in a secondary role and a declining position.

Thus, it is not until the late 20th and early 21st centuries that the societies have moved into financial services.

Hmmm. I see the article now actually says:

Over time, various similar fraternal groups merged, developing alongside America's Savings and Loan systems, and were incorporated to benefit their members with financial services.

Hmmm. Also rather "wishy-washy"! Also only, at most, half true. Same comments that I made above seem applicable.

It only ever said that. I didn't write it. My comment above was aimed at illustrating what I thought the sentence meant, i.e. mutual organisations growing in parallel, in order to elicit a citation. Never mind. - Fayenatic (talk) 22:30, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

It may also be worth noting that the deleted sentence was a hangover from the article's previous location at Fraternal Forestry -- I moved it to this location as that title was a bit vague, and the article had no sourced content that was not about IOF. - Fayenatic (talk) 19:58, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
