Etonia[edit]

The connection between Gümüşhacıköy and the ancient Etonia is outmoded. E. Olshausen and J. Biller in their Historisch-geographische Aspekte der Geschichte des Pontischen und Armenischen Reiches (Wiesbaden, 1984) tentatively identify Gümüşhacıköy with an ancient settlement called Diakopa (vol 1, p. 126). The Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World (Princeton, 2000) follows their identification (map 87). Olshausen and and Biller do not attempt to connect Etonia with any modern place (p. 127). Though Etonia remains effectively unlocated, Turkish language sources and no doubt local tourist literature continue to associate Gümüşhacıköy and Etonia. The attribution ought to be avoided in this article. I shall remove Etonia from the lead and the sentences about Roman Gümüşhacıköy from the article. In that case, maybe the redirection here from Etonia should also be removed? Currently, it is unexplainable for a lay user. --Oop (talk) 09:17, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
