Excavations[edit]

"1883" heading apparently refers to 1833 excavation described in text. Source for the remarkable claim that namestones of Hild's mother and sister had been identified from the dig is a dead link to a 148-year-old travelers' guide. I found no hint of confirmation of this claim elsewhere on line. As the resting place of members of both Northumbrian and East Anglian royalty Hartlepool would likely have been a site of remembrance and pilgrimage long after its "disappearance from history" in the seventh century. No modern source seems willing to go beyond stating that the names on the headstones were common ones of the time. The whole thing smells to me of typical 19th century overreach beyond the archaeological evidence with a dash of local boosterism thrown in for the sake of the tourist trade.137.70.164.228 (talk) 22:00, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
