Lake in image[edit]

There's been some reverts over what lake is in the photograph taken by DanielCD (Image:DowntownLC.jpg). The buildings in question are visible from above in this Google Maps aerial image. The view is toward the southeast from the north shore of Lake Charles near I-10, and across the riverboat dock (which is visible if one pans up and left a bit). -- Cyrius|✎ 00:03, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Contraband days[edit]

Daniel, the pirates and Jean Lafitte are played by members of some sort of society. This is also the group that started Contraband Days and still hosts the festival as I understand it. It's considered a great honor to be voted by your peers to be Jean Lafitte for the year and goes to someone in the group who has worked to promote the festival. It should be held in the next couple of weeks, so I'll try to get the name of the organization from Lake Charles papers to add to the Contraband Days page. Main Commercial Road[edit]

How is Ryan St. the main commercial road? Highway 14, for instance, is usually bussier, isn't it? Ryan Street might have been bussier in times past, but I don't think that applies anymore. This includes commercially. That's like saying that 2-10 still runs 'south' of Lake Charles. Wouldn't you think?--J. Daily 00:34, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Religion[edit]

Before making further changes, here are my reasons for my changes. First, I changed the wording to make it stronger. I did not change any of the information.

Citations are needed. The claim that the Diocese has 90,000 people needs some citation badly. Originally, the section said the City of Lake Charles, but that would seem impossible for the city itself to have 90,000 Roman Catholics. Perhaps they have a specific number of registered members, but one must also factor in how many of those have since either moved, switched to other religions, or fallen out completely---most of whom being children raised in the church who no longer participate.

There was something stating where the Jewish people came from, which was completely irrelevant. Such a statement would need citation and further explanation that would cause the section to lose its brevity and concisiveness. No one tried to state where the Christians came from. Also, I use the words like "followers" as opposed to practioners, because common sense tells us that not everyone who claims a religion necessarily practices it. I also state the Diocese has a "congregation of . . . " as not to specify how many Catholics there actually are, because no uniform system is stated to explain how the numbers were arrived at for each denomination.

Also, I put both "Protestant" and "Evangelical," because although many Protestant denominations are Evangelical as well, not all Evangelicals claim "Protestant" anymore; they simply claim "Christian." There's a big split between earlier Protestant Christian denominations, and the later-developing denominations, which formed well after the Protestant Reformation and often do not consider themselves "Protestant" at least in part because of this. Protestant denominations nowadays can generally be viewed as direct, primary schisms from Roman Catholicism.

The atheist thing needs some citation. I left it alone with "an atheist group" because I did not know whether the original writer meant there is an actual group, or just a significant number of atheists. This needs clarification.

Also, I'm sure there are members of many other religions which are not substantiated in this article. Perhaps they could be named and specific places of worship listed.

It might be appropraite to write about some of the larger churches in the area and post links to their websites. Phrases like "affiliated with" should be used when it's not clear what system was used to determine a specific number of "members" of any group. Below is how the article was rewritten by me.

Oh, and maybe someone can ellaborate on the voodoo thing. To a lot of people I can imagine that being an unwelcome element, but it's traditionally been all over Louisiana and is undeniable. I'm sure with some googling some reports have been made about its presence here.

Voodoo is not prevalent as a religion, the only places being the usual tourist shops. Lake Charles has more of a cajun and less creole background. Also, it might be of note that part of the reason for the large Catholic population is also due to the cajun descendants.

I'm cleaning up the religon to a brief, short little blurb. Right now it's unbalanced and tilts too much towards the Catholics. If someone wants to clean it up more and name the head of the Baptist, Methodist, Episcopal etc. churches in the city, then the Bishop and all that errata could stay, I suppose, but really, it shouldn't be there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.11.202.87 (talk) 03:01, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Religion[edit]

Christianity is the predominant religion in the Lake Charles area. Roman Catholicism is the largest denomination of which, with a Diocese of around 90,000 parishioners. Lake Charles is home to several Protestant and Evangelical denominations as well. A substantial portion of the population affiliates itself with Judaism. Notably, there is an atheist group as well. Particular elements of Voodoo are recognizable in the city as well, as one can spot jars filled with animal organs placed around graves and hanging from trees in the pauper cemetery on Broad Street.


Separation of Birth and Associations with Lake Charles[edit]

In the section "Famous Residents Past and Present" there are a lot of non-resident (etc. Dolly Parton recorded first album . . .). Do you think a separate section is required for clarity and better organization? Any comments welcomed.

I agree. Additionally, just because someone is from Calcasieu Parish does not mean they are from Lake Charles. Could we keep Sulphur residents on Sulphur's page, etc?

I agree with the first comment. Maybe under the title of "People Associated With Lake Charles"?

I've lived in Lake Charles the majority of my life and have never heard anyone call it "the lake city."

I know Eddie Mormon is a legitimate painter who has acheived some level of success. I can't attest as to whether or not he is famous; I'll leave that to others more familiar with those standards. However, I do object to the last sentence, "These paintings can be seen and bought on his web site (eddiemormon.com)." Let's keep the ads out of Wikipedia. History of City[edit]

What is the source or scholarship for the claim that "Marco Eliche" is the founder of the city, along with the claims of "Porte de Lafitte" and Riviere Lafitte? As a historian myself, I'm not familiar with this claim or attribution.Achistorian (talk) 15:15, 25 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Radio stations list - necessary and encyclopedic?[edit]

Is the list of radio stations encyclopedic? I know some editors keep up with that section, but it seems completely unnecessary. Are all of those radio stations actually within the city? I imagine not. I know we tried to get it deleted years ago, and someone added it back in later.
