Fights[edit]

If he was undefeated in 3000 fights, how did he split wins with Mean Machine? IrishGuy 21:15, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Worth mentioning that he wouldn't fight Charles Bronson? At least thats what it says in Charles Bronsons book.

He was going to fight Charles Bronson, but Broson was in prison at the time and the authorities would not allow it. Bronson is still in prison.....

Needs Wikifying[edit]

If these claims cant be verified by at least one source that could even claim them as legitimate rumour then need we really have them here? Direction[edit]

McLean was acquitted on direction after it was pointed out that a Police neck-lock on Humphries might well have been the cause of death.

I thought it best I put up an {{unreferenced}} template. Reading the first paragraphs, I found some of the claims hard to believe and with all the "supposedlies," uncited quotes, etc. I think it's justified. Superdan006 (talk) 01:24, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have reservations about the general tone of this article, which reads somewhat like a hagiography written by a fan. Many (most?) people would consider LM to have been a pretty unsavoury character but the article doesn't really reflect this. There seems to be a reluctance to say anything negative about old school East End hardmen generally. Unlicensed not the same as bare knuckle[edit]

Article implies in several places that McLean's unlicensed fights were fought without gloves. This is not the case - all of McLean's verifiable fights (6 wins and 6 losses) were unsanctioned (i.e. unlicensed) boxing matches, with both participants wearing gloves. Ali and Mr. T[edit]

I removed the below text. (Here's my edit) This text implies that both refused because they were afraid of McLean. Sounds like something that'd get written in a fawning biography.

Muhammed Ali was approached by an agent of McLean, but turned down a match against the Guv'nor, either because he did not wish the risk of damaging his reputation in an unlicensed match or risk any severe injury which is unlikely in a professional match. McLean also sent out an invite for a bout to Mr. T, but was turned down, as Mr. T said he was concentrating on his film and television career and did not wish to appear with facial injuries.

I could send similar challenges to both, and make the same declarations if they ignored my letters. Does anyone know of statements by Ali or by Mr. T confirming that they were both scared of getting hurt by McLean? Gronky (talk) 18:24, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nipper Read[edit]

It's highly improbable that it was Read who arrested McLean regarding the Hippodrome "Murder". Read would have been 67 at the time and well past retirement age. Not sure what it was in 1992, but it is currently 60.46.7.195.132 (talk) 11:41, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hollywood interest[edit]

This paragraph appears to claim to be from his autobiography:

In his autobiography, McLean recounts that various film studios had expressed an interest in making a film based on his life and career in unlicensed boxing. McLean wanted Craig Fairbrass to portray him as he had known the actor for some time, and considered that Fairbrass resembled himself as a younger man. McLean travelled to Hollywood to discuss the matter with film studio executives, but their preference for Sylvester Stallone for the part caused McLean to discontinue negotiations. One supposed film promoter, later found to have been a conman, took more than a million pounds from McLean and disappeared. The plan fell into hiatus on McLean's death.

An IP has added a citation needed template and so I have tried reviewing his autobiography and cannot find any of this. This is the source I am looking in. Is there another?
